mikeyb10supra
Has anyone gone single with a 5-speed box and is running near 500bhp mark?? Was wondering what the capabilities are, and if its worth doing when I get my single project up and running, im auto now Might have to get a ride out in an auto to see what there like with a single first....might change my mind

mikeyb10supra
I spoke to him about it but he was unsure how much abuse the box could take
mikeyb10supra
posted on supra forums as well, hope I do better than last time
bromy
Mine is holding up so far:thumbs: running a Precision T61 at 0.8 bar around 400fwhp going for 500 early next year, I would do a six speed swap though if you are going to the trouble of swapping auto to manual
Chris Wilson
It won't like the torque one little bit. It may last a while, but it'll be on a knife edge.

Chris how about the R154 box from the 1JZ and the with 1jz bellhouse?? are there any other box's apart from the 6-speed that are worth looking at, im not worried about high speed runs?? Chris Wilson
AFAIK they both have similar torque handling ability. Easiest swap is the six speed Getrag from the TT Supra MKIV, otherwise there are umpteen other boxes, but they would need a lot of custom made bits to use them. mikeyb10supra
Hmm Thought that might be the case...how about borg warner T5 box's I was offerend one of these a while back but was unsure?
Chris Wilson
A T5 with Glebe dog box, straight cut internals would be OK, but horrible as a road gearbox. That's the box I intend to bung in my RWD Skyline. As standard it wouldn't be up to it, in theory. A Corvette box would be OK, if you made a bellhousing adaptor, prop, clutch and release package, rear mount, gear lever, blah blah. None even come close, cost wise, to a simple swap to a TT Supra gearbox, clutch and stuff.

I think the 6-speed is looking more likely, only problem is sourcing one, there very hard to get hold off, I had an opportunity to purchase one at a good price but money as always is the limiting factor at the moment!! Chris Wilson
Buy a cheap complete car and break it? I would break loads, but Jane insists she won't live in a scrap yard....

Chris Wilson
Probably not very, but I don't know, despite my wife liking the look of the things, (no accounting for lack of taste.... ), I have never had any dealings with them save to make a repair kit for their troublesome 4WD transmission input shaft problem. Sorry I'm not much help to you there.
tDR
The R154 is a good bit stronger than the W58 from what I've read. Checkout US Supra forums for more info on this and the conversion kit boostlogic offer to fit this box. IIRC the W58 is marginal above 350lb/ft torque - depends what kinda abuse you give it. The R154 is apparently good for 500lb/ft torque. Cheers, Brian.
