scooby_doo_do
Prob a really daft question, but it sais in the manual to run the car to normal operating system then turn off and check oil... The only problem i'm having is that... If you check it straight away its over the top of the maximum line.. If you leave it 5 mins its about 3/4's level, leave it another 5 mins and its below half way.... Which one should i believe... Or are they all lying to me

You mean Temperature not System, right? If you check it straight away its over the top of the maximum line.. Once the oil is up to normal temp it should be ok to check the level within 1 or 2 mins of turning the engine off. The level of oil should rise slightly (not fall) as the oil settles into the sump. You aren't by any chance just pulling the dipstick out and reading it are you? You're wiping it clean first, right?
Digsy
If the oil volume decreases it may indicate some degree of aeration in the oil (oil doesnt change density as it heats up does it???) Might be to be expected in a turbo engine as the oil coming out of the turbo will be whipped up pretty good. TBH I think its odd that the standard procedure for checking oil sould be to run the engine first as you then have to wait for drain down from the head before you can measure the level. scooby_doo_do
"You mean Temperature not System, right? " Yep, thats the one...... Doh.. "You aren't by any chance just pulling the dipstick out and reading it are you? You're wiping it clean first, right?" Nope, cleaning it all fully.... Although i think i got confused and typed it wrong... It goes the other way in other words the dipstick level rises.... So when's best to check the oil level then ? Elliot
Hmm, I've always checked it when the engine is cold! My technical inability seems to have struck again!

Hot (thin) oil will drain into the sump pretty much fully in a min or two usually. If yours seems to take longer then either it ain't hot enough or you aren't giving it enough time to settle. The greater level is almost certainly the correct one
Terminator
I have always checked my oil on every car I have owned in the morning after the car has stood overnight.
