Computer Virus?

Elliot

Recommended Posts

For some strange reason, every time I've booted my computer up in the last week or so the system32 folder has opened at the same time (and remained open)

I don't remember changing any settings, so anyone know a reason why this would be happening

or

Know how I can stop it happening?

check %allusersprofile%\Start Menu\Programs\Startup for wayward shortcuts (just double click on any and all icons in that folder and see if one of them opens up your System32 folder).

Do the same for %userprofile%\Start Menu\Programs\Startup

Delete the offending shortcut if this is the cause.

Thanks for the replies everyone

Got to be a virus. Type MSCONFIG into your Start->Run box and you will see a list of startup programs. Also go through your Task Manager looking for suspicious running files.

I've tried that, but have no idea of what half the programs are, and whether they are likely to contain a virus

What about

REGSVR32.EXE /S CTASIO.DLL

That has a 32 in it, but I have no idea what it does!

have you done a virus scan..?

Never heard of this one, but it does sound strange... System32 would be where there the nuts and bolts of your OS would live....

Several times!! :) I use Norton Antivirus.

Is OS operating system? When I first used to get the window opening it was accompanied with a message saying something like "editing or altering files in this folder can make affact some programmes running" or something like that.

The only problem I've had recently is my iTunes player keeps makes a distorted noise mid-song sometimes. If I pause the song then play again it's fine! Maybe it's something to do with the most recent iPod updater...

If its XP, trying doing a system restore from start, programs, accessories, system tools. This will not delete and data just takes you back to a good known check point, it can be very handy

Wont that take the computer back to a certain point? Wont all the data since that point therefore be lost? I've got quite a lot to lose if that's the case! :)

I've just tried that, and it only shows 5 programmes. I've tried opening them and none bring up the system 32 malarky

Any more ideas people? I guess I should start saving all my stuff to CDs and re-install everything.

Silly question, but have you tried closing the system32 folder, before you reboot the computer, if so does the computer reboot cleanly without crashing?

Windows is able to save changes that the user makes to the arrangement of windows and icons when Windows 2000 is restarted. To disable this view this link http://www.microsoft.com/technet/prodtechnol/windows2000serv/reskit/regentry/36679.mspx?mfr=true

Yes, it closes no problem. I always close it before turning the computer off, and when I reboot it, it's there again.

I haven't had any problems with crashing in ages. It used to freeze every time I turned the computer off, but for about the last month it's been fine.

I'm running XP by the way, so not sure if it would be the same as for 2000.

I suppose that link would be good if everything was running fine, and it's just a security measure to stop you changing stuff by accident? Or is that something I should be doing now?

How do I get into the program manager!? :)

Elliot if you don't know what anything is then put it into Google :)

I know REGSVR32.EXE will register a DLL dile onto the the system and Google says this for CTASIO.DLL:

ASIO (Audio Stream In/Out) drivers for the SoundBlaster Audigy 2 series soundcards - for recording and home project studios. Required if you use this functionality

Google it is then! :)

After reading that article I've checked both the HKEY_CURRENT_USER and the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE sections, and there are about 10 different datas (?) that have " either side of them.

Am I supposed to delete all of these?! Sorry guys, am useless at this stuff :( Have no idea what I'm doing & don't want to delete my hard drive or anything!

The data for the SB Audigy 2 is listed as being /L:ENG

WAIT!! Just googled that, and this came up! I'll let you know if I find the download...

Sorted.

As the link said, it's to do with Dell's OEM Soundblaster Audigy. Weird that it's only just started happening after a year or so.

Anyway, I downloaded the patch and rebooted several times & it's been fine each time - no system32 popping up!

Thanks to all who helped :)

Glad you've sorted it now, but that "potential quick fix here" I mentioned above, contains the following code:

On Error Resume Next

Set WshShell = WScript.CreateObject("WScript.Shell")

X = WshShell.RegRead("HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run\SB Audigy 2 Startup Menu")

If X "" Then

WshShell.RegWrite "HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run\SB Audigy 2 Startup Menu", "/L:ENG"

X = MsgBox("Finished! The System32 folder should not open on boot for this user.", vbOKOnly, "Done")

Else

MsgBox "This script cannot repair your issue. The expected Registry value was not found.", vbOKOnly, "Finished."

End If

Set WshShell = Nothing

and would have done it for you ;)
