Guest gzaerojon
Noticed this for a while now, it only does it at certain times though but the only way i can simulate it is to drive it 2nd gear about 30 mph (tt auto btw) then foot off the pedal for a bit of light engine braking, then just a blip on the throttle again. it also does it a bit when parked up and i give it a few tiny blips. any ideas? Pig
valve stem oil seals if it does it when you first start it up?
Clarkey
Valve stem seals - as far as I know only tend to cause blue smoke at cold engine startup because the rubber seals have like shrunk - when they go cold. They expand when the engine is hot - stopping oil getting into the cylinders. From your description - it sounds like it's doing it when the engine is hot. Turbo seals perhaps ? Guest gzaerojon
valve stem oil seals if it does it when you first start it up? that was one thought, but its fine on start up, just when its normal running temp while driving

Guest gzaerojon
is there a way of testing for turbo seals?
Clarkey
How about removing the IC pipework ? Or your intake pipe - to check for lots of synthetic oil ? Alittle bit of oil is acceptable - as far as I know. My intake pipe has a wee abit of oil. Not much. The only thing that's flowing through that pipe is air from your IC - into your intake. Clarkey
oh ok i'll give that a try. so basically if oil is leaking out the seals will it only smoke when it makes it into the inlet? Yes, my understanding from what Mark told me at Phoenix was - when the oil seeps through turbo-seals - it travels to the IC - and then up into the intake. It's then getting burnt off in the cylinders.
Clarkey
When my seals died - my old SMIC had a 1/2 litre of oil in it! That was 8 months driving with weepy seals.
Guest gzaerojon
found another way to simulate it if this helps? when it's warmed up, if i sit there giving it loads of tiny blips on the throttle it really starts to bellow out
SupraJames
Sounds like turbo oil seals to me, I had them go on mine, sorry to say its not the cheapest job to fix, turbos off and then off to a turbo company for new seals, balancing etc then back on the car. Mine cost me around £1200 to get done..!
SimonB
First check you haven't overfilled with oil, that's a common cause of smoke. Check your oil level with a cold engine.
Guest gzaerojon
Mine cost me around £1200 to get done..! dam!! not sure i'd want to pay all that out just to keep stock tubbies, single or hybrids now me thinks
Clarkey
single or hybrids now me thinks If this is your choice - then put all the costs in a Excel sheet - side/by/side. Hybrids & a single require pretty much the same supporting mods. I think you'll be suprised that a single setup (for a decent one) - isn't that much more expensive. The single - gives you alot more tuning possibilities.

No they wouldnt afaik. Unless you change all the other stuff too. Not worth the agro. I would be happy enough to let my 3 go for 150 so, if your prepared to take the ris with 2nd hand tubbies, i wouldnt worry too much!
