I'm downloading Initial D on Azureus and have noticed that Stage 1 is coming in as .OGM and .MKV files, while Stage 4 is showing as a .DAA file.

The other stages all came in as .AVI's like a good file should.

Can anyone shed some light on what to do with them when they finish downloading or should I stop 'em and find a different seed?

Cheers

OGM (Ogg Media file) & MKV (Matroska) are alternative "container" formats like AVI. AVI is rather old and limited now, problems with file sizes over 2GB, no support for built in subtitles, chapters, etc.

OGM files aren't that common, and Matroska is probably a better format, but MP4 is becoming the main container format for video now.

Anyway, download the matroska splitter from here http://haali.cs.msu.ru/mkv/ (top right of page) and they should play fine in your media player of choice.

i download many Japanese and Chinese movies and series, and a few these days are mkv, ogm etc.

you can have lot's of probs with subtitles, if you just burn the files to dvd and try to play through normal DVD player. i don't mean if you take time to take softsubs and bind them to the file. most standalone DVD players don't like ogm or mkv, only basic avi or mpg formats.

hardsubs are the best as you have no worries. softsubs can be a real pain, there are so many different softsub options, not all are visible if it's a straight avi to DVD burn.

worse still are the ones you download and find a Japanese movie dubbed into Spanish or French, and the sub's don't work, lol.

if you get Initial D (2005 movie) it was released in Japan with Jpn subs, but original movie was HK/Chinese so not sure if you will get Canto version.

cool, you are getting the 26 ep Stage 1 (which was jpn/eng) and stage 4 anime :D

btw, if you get the Tokyopop version you will be missing out on the excellent eurobeat music by the amazing japanese group m.ov.e. (Yuri Masuda and Motsu)- they are totally awesome, have all their cd's, avoid the western produced music, it's bad. i drive the Supra a lot of the time playing Move, it's like being in the series :D

edited to add: if you can find the Move album - Rewind, or Globe's - Global Trance albums you should check them out. they should be on p2p, or you can try irc. there is a Globe concert DVD box set on Usenet atm.

extra edit - don't forget Extra Stage and Arcade Stage if you didn't get them. most only know of stages 1 - 4, and you seem to be ok on them

extra extra edit lol, if you can get hold of Legend of Speed you may enjoy that one as well :D

Domo Arigato (I think) :D

I've got an Initial D OST file downloading on e-mule, but it's taking forever, no idea what it is.

Just added Legend of Speed to Azureus.

Next'll be some Mecha Anime. I have Appleseed, Dominion Tank Police and Patlabor 1&2 on video from years ago and I'm waiting for eps 5,7,8 & 9 of Guyver to download.

Been into Manga stuff for ages.

  • 2 weeks later...

Phew - been off ill this week, so I've watched Extra Stage (that was cool) Stage & 4 (5 eps to go). Watched 2 & 3 last week. Can't get a converter to work changing Stage 1's ogg & mkv files to avi - so annoying!.

Stage 4 rocks, best one yet and you were right about M.O.V.E; they are a cool band - the songs on Project D are really good. I've managed to find the Project D Sound Files on P2P which has those tracks, but they appear to be cut short (just like they are in the anime) should there be more to these songs?

I'm just downloading the full discography now.

hi Animal :)

wow, you had a really busy week watching all the anime, hope it made you get over the illness :D

i have same prob with ogg and mkv, i can convert mkv using winavi, but it makes file sizes huge. double their original.

i can't remember what project D is like, will have to dig it out again. i thought you would like MOVE, they are awesome band, stick their cd in the car, and its perfect driving music.

if their is anything you need from MOVE let me know i have everything, gigabytes of their stuff, cd's, videos, live performances, concerts. same with Globe, if you want to try them, amazing just like MOVE.

you may see a group called 'galla', i doubt you will find more than two tracks ever. i have been looking for years now, and only found two of them.

btw, if you want to check out Fast and the Furious: Tokyo Drift, from torrentspy. thats my fave of the series so far, set in Japan with awesome drifitng scenes, like Initial D.

good to see the Japanese phrases as well, so i will say 'ja ne' as well,

all the best

Ian

Why convert them? Just install the matroska splitter and you should be able to play them back fine.

hiya :)

i have that on the pc, it is good. also all the other codecs

i would like to convert so i can watch on standalone dvd player, same as xvid need converting. been looking for a good ogg/mkv/rmvb converter for ages. any suggestions?

Thorin - playing the files isn't a problem, it's just same as Ian, I want to burn 'em to DVD so I can watch 'em on a normal player.

I tried Puma Video Converter, but it didn't seem to work - just sat there saying converting 0%, not locked up, just not doing owt.

I'd quite like to learn Japanese but I just don't have the time yet, and it looks hard work.

anyone heard or got a song called "silver moon" by Japan?

a friend in canada was wanting it.

why not just buy a divx dvd player saves you converting films to play on a dvd player.can get about 4-6 films on a dvd disc.

my mate uses a program called dvd santa to convert them so they will play on normal house dvd`s but it takes hours to convert each film

KaoriFan might have the track, have you looked for it on a p2p site?

As for a DivX player, that would be an answer, but they cost money, plus my mate wants a copy on DVD.

I've been using Nero to create the disks and it takes about 4-6 hours to put 12 episodes on DVD. I just set one going before going to work, then another one when I go to bed. Job done.
