Crack in windscreen

JamesG

Recommended Posts

Parked my car up for about three hours yesterday and when I came back to it, I had a crack in the windscreen about 8 inches long! This is the result of a tiny stone chip I got about a week ago that I couldn't even find on the windscreen at the time.

So I'll need a new windscreen asap. Never had one replaced before. Do they generally fit proper Toyota parts or might they try to fob me off with a non-Toyota windscreen? (It's RAC autoglass, by the way).

Another thing, my drivers side wiper arm cannot be pulled away from the windscreen more than a few inches otherwise it snags on the bonnet. Does anyone else have this problem, or do I have the wrong size wiper arm fitted?

Cheers, James.

edited to say: I just noticed on that pic you can see the paint chip on the bonnet where the wiper arm hits it if lifted up.

i had a screen in mine, i went round and round looking for the cheapest one fitted, there are pattern ones about pilkington do one but they do not have the blue sun visor strip only the OEM has this.

If someone says the screen costs more that £400 they are talking @:moo:@ several times i have used a local windscreen company who quoted me something like £340 for a genuine toyo screen, he said to go the insurance route,on top of that they paid half my xs £25!

make sure they fit the genuine toyota seal to the universal ones are not as good so he said.

when i went to RAC screens i could not beleve it when he said they would charge my insurance company £1250 for a toyota one i larfed in his face and walked off!

£1500 excess! That's quite impressive. Did you send them a signed document promising to crash the car into a bunch of old grannies within the first year? ;) ....or do you live in Moss Side?

I don't think that would apply to windscreen damage anyway. As someone said earlier, you'll have a separate excess for that that doesn't affect your NCB.

My windscreen is being fitted on Friday. I didn't ask the guy about what make it was, but he did say it had a green sunstrip at the top like mine.

well I actually live close to Wythenshawe, the car-crime capital of the north west I believe. For insurance purposes I'm living at my grans. I'm 23 with no official NCB apart from being on a clients fleet policy for the last two years. I'm on that fleet policy again now and it's only £600 with the mad excess. Not too bad really I don't think. The Alfa was £2,100 last year and £3,600 the year before!

  • 2 weeks later...

Just to update this, RAC auto windscreens replaced my windscreen yesterday and did a really good job. I think the guy who fitted it was quite impressed with the supra and he was looking through autotrader at them when I got back!

My wiper arms were on the wrong sides, and they swapped them round for me :)

I work for Autoglass and fitted a screen to a TT (import) last Thurs. Piece of piss to fit, only prob being it was an import. Difference is the tint. We initially went out to it nearly 2 weeks prior to me fitting it, only to find it was an import and we had UK glass. So took chassis number, run it thru Toyota database to get correct glass code (so the new glass is identical to that that was fitted in the factory when she was built, finally tracked one down then I collected car and brought it in for fitting. Now I say thatwas the only prob, but that's cos the glass I fitted was THE ONLY ONE IN THE ENTIRE UK lol.... Fookin treated that screen with kid gloves the whole time I'll tell ya :D Thats why I collected the car and brought it in myself rather than go out to it and fit it - incase glass craked whilst en route in van or something happend whilst fitting - ie: started raining halfway thru, or something fell on it/it fell off stand - it has happened lol.... Still went in perfect, and I discovered what it was like to drive a Supra TT and now know enfactuated(*sp) with em :D

Same deal, ins paid, £50 excess, no effect on NCB....

Interesting. What is the difference between the windscreens? Is it the green tint at the top of the screen?

Must have been lucky with mine. They managed to get the right windscreen in about 3 days, although because of the rain I had to wait a bit and go down to the depot on a saturday.
