Matt Harwood
What makes you think it's the rear brakes? Check your brake fluid level

Matt Harwood
The handbrake light doubles up as a low fluid warning light, usually in conjunction with the big red warning triangle. The rear brakes have internal adjusters. If you've already checked the mechanism is all working freely, the weak side may just need a bit of adjustment. I don't want to be patronising, but I assume you know the handbrake mechanism has nothing to do with the caliper. The handbrake mechanism is all inside the rear disk. Matt Harwood
LOL at the 'hit it with a hammer' It's fairly easy to adjust the rear handbrake. If you take the wheel off, you should find a rubber bung in the drum part of the disk. Remove the cog and rotate the disk so that the hole is at the bottom. Get a small torch and look inside, you should see a small toothed wheel. Get a small screwdriver and rotate the toothed wheel until you feel the disk binding, then release it a couple of turns. Does that make sense?

supra steveo
been to "check piont" and they topped up my brake fluid and hey presto the light has gone out they fella also said that my front pads look low and could do with a change he also said that my rear discs looked warped so it looks like i am going to have to spend more money now
Matt Harwood
Pads getting low is what usually makes the fluid level drop. If you're going to change them, make sure you drain a bit of fluid out first. Otherwise, when you compress the caliper pistons, you'll have an overflowing master cylinder. supra steveo
i know we only put a little bit of fluid in
Bob
I'd be dubious about the guy saying your discs 'look' warped - if they're warped you'll hear them rubbing. Being able to see if they're a millimetre or so out of true is pretty good eyesight, especially if they were working face on to the discs.
supra steveo
funny i was thinking that, i got some prices anyway off the car that ibrar is parting out, i know that the front pads are near there limit though
Matt Harwood
A lot of people class visual hot-spots as warped disks. You can't always hear warped disks rubbing, but you can certainly feel them through the pedal, especially when the brakes get hot.
