Justin
Anyone know how to check this for faults or do I have to take it to Toyota? Came on the other day again even though I have topped up and the dipstick shows between half and full. The level light came on when I was at the lights pointing up a hill. Then went off. Where should I check for all possible leak points by the way? Ta very much. J.
richardharmon
I had a really bad oil leak, enough to cause the oil level to drop far enough (from full) for the level warning light to come on over about 60 miles. Turned out to be the oil pressure switch, which meant I couldn’t see the oil dripping out unless the engine was running. Although the switch still worked (no pressure light came on) oil was passing from the input to and leaking out the collar on the plug at the back. It’s a bugger to get to; you have to take off the power steering pump and A/C compressor. Any way just a thought, you might want to check it. Justin
Cheers Rich, sounds like a nasty job but I need to get to the bottom of it so it's a start. J.
Steve Cargill
Justing, are you 100% it's the level light and not the pressure light?
Justin
Yup the yellowy light not the red one.

Just checking, my oil pressure light used to come on when stationary pointing uphill. Turns out the oil pump was heading towards being mashed, too late for the bearings though. At least that's not your problem.

Terminator
Justin if you have an external leak you will see signs under the car. I had a leak in my cossie on a cam chain tensioner gasket that only opened when I was pushing it. It look like I had under sealed the car with oil and the level on the stick did not drop that quickly either.
Justin
Phil, the only visible external leak I can find is on my diff which is another story. Can't find any external engine/turbo leak signs but as I said to Leon: 1. Oil (level) light comes on after 20 seconds of sustained 3500-4200 rpm then throttle off triggers it. 2. Light goes off 20 seconds after throttle off. 3. On a seperate ocasion the light came on at traffic lights when halted whilst pointed up a steepish hill. This was 1 week after oil top up. 4. When cold dipstick says half full. ????????????????
