Just had a call from someone claiming to be fronm the foresters trust, endorsed by Stephen Hendry and another famous person.

They have picked me from yell.com out of all the other computer services companies with a view to be a part of some monthly magazine they send out, where they select 25-30 different companies (of all different sectors, in my case computer services), to donate/spend money on putting an add in their magaizine. Apparently this magazine is due out to 30,000 peeps in my local area. An add is £500 for a full page, £300 half page and £145 for a quater page. Being a small one man band this is a fairly large outlay for advertising. I havent said yes to anything as of yet but one thing that concerns me is she said was "ask for your password everytime we call so that you dont confuse us with other groups that do this". Which leads me to believe this could be a country wide thing.

I have absolutely no experiance with this kind of thing and have simply paid my money for my Yellow pages advertising and thought that was that. Excuse if this sounds shallow, but could this posibly be a scam?

On the face of it I would say 'probably'.... what's the magazine called?

Also if you've never heard of it then there is probably a good reason for that... there are millions of door drop leaflets that call themselves magazines these days..

I get calls all day long from web directories and magazines telling me they're going to change the world... and we need to get on board now! special price! have all taken space!

If you've not advertised before, then I personally don't think this 'chance' phone call would be the way to start.. know your customers, know where they would find you and advertise there... but only if you need to... :)

Golden rule

If you are spending £500 on an advert = how you going to ensure you will get £5000 worth of business?

IMHO they are a bit like the 'local firemans newsletter' - unless you need them to do you a big favour in the future - pass! :)

Sounds like this may fall in between "an almost legit" business, and a scam.

Many advertising companies may well will print an advert as they say they will, and may send the mag out (although you will have no idea where to or to how many places) so can't really be called a scam.

Saying that, once you pay your money you will have absolutely no idea of what they will do (unless you belive enerything they tell you like it's the gospel).

On the otherhand it may be a complete scam with no mag and no advert !

Sounds like the "European Fax Directory" etc etc. expensive and of no use at all.

I disregard all this type of offer and stick to ads I know that will work (yellow pages in my case).

On "scams", I often get a call from a company who tell me that they spoke to me last year and I said to call back for help in a publication on drugs awareness for local schools. They first of all ask which school I would like the "pack" to go to etc etc - don't know if they send anything out but I do know that if you ask how much, it's a forture !

If you are in business, be VERY wary of EVERYBODY in my experience.

OK ... Now for the advertising faxes we get by the handfull (one cheeky one asking if we wanted to buy fax toner as we might be getting low !................

Cheers

HAHAHA!

That's a really good reason for setting up a computer to behave as a fax machine - just get a screen image of the fax, and buy some spare delete keys for all the ones you'll wear out on your keyboard.

Sounds good, but we deal with two companies who have PC-fax machines and both have troubles sometimes....

We fecently joined the Fax pref service (foc) and it seems to have worked.
