chilli
well it's a statistical thing. Many many many cars on the road than bikes. 50% or so of bike riders ride like their life is going out of fashion lol if all car drivers did that too, everyone would be having major smashes and bikers wouldn't even stand a chance! there are really crap car drivers, but given how many cars there are on the road, luckily this is a minority thing, can the same be said for bikers, hmmm it's not so convincing is it. LOL! How about 50% of Supra drivers drive like their lifes depend on it! Most car drivers have just as many bad habits as bike riders! What about this scenario then: You overtake a car in your Supra and a car coming the other way flashes you because he thinks in an ordinary car it would be a bit tight to get through but you know in your 400 bhp it no problem and perfectly safe. Does that make you a bad driver? The other driver would say so and thats what you are almost saying about bikers that they should not use the advantages that a bike gives them.... chilli
I understand what you're saying, however I've just seen a whole bunch of properly close calls lately, where bikers have been so keen to overtake they have caused cars to take avoiding action. Seems worse when I'm in the supra, it's almost as if they are on a mission to prove a point. If they want to kill themselves, then who cares, but I'd rather not get caught up in the smash due to their irresponsibility. and regarding the point you make - if I overtake and force anyone to take evasive action, I consider that to be a major f*ck up on my part. having said that, people will flash and beep you even when it is perfectly safe, we are not really talking about those sort of people. So I ride and race bikes and drive my Supra but when I'm on a bike I see some trully horrific driving by car drivers just a bad as any biker. I suppose you get good drivers and bad drivers and good bikers and bad but I think the percentage is probably much the same. Just the car drivers are better at killing the riders! Anyway I agree with Jake most people who hold bike and car licences are better overall drivers than car only people. :)
Kopite
Most bikers i've seen are good road users except when racing of course Can't think of many occasions where i've personally had a biker thinking he owns the road (except tail gating an old granny who was doing 50 on the overtaking lane of the M1 when the inside 2 lanes were empty....) RobSheffield
i have a bike licence, and i had a bike about 2 years ago. i sold it because of all the fools who tried to kill me every day as Jake says, ride a bike and you will understand, its part of what the 'think bike' slogan is all about. people dont look when they pull out. JohnA
... when I'm on a bike I see some trully horrific driving by car drivers just a bad as any biker... It depends on the expectations you have I suppose. I expect them all to be airheaded, tired, absent-minded and with a short attention-span, so then nothing really surprises me. I expect the most ridiculous manouvre and -guess what? - sometimes it just happens right in front of me (or in my mirrors if I've managed to overtake that potential accident-inducing moron). You can see the signs of a tired lorry driver or a boy-racer from half a mile away. Just the way they 'sit' on the road is enough to start alarm bells. With my life at stake, I take as few chances as possible, any accident on a bike might cost at least a limb (*if* you're lucky). It does take luck as well, but IMO reading the road ahead and the vehicles around is 95% of the survival 'kit'. 4% is avoiding your own mistakes/gaffes/mech problems, and 1% luck. ...That's my take anyway... chilli
well whatever we think, I agree with John that the ability to read the road well ahead and the circumstances you find yourself in (and assuming nothing about other road users) means that most accidents can be avoided before then even have a chance to happen. Pre-emptive not reactive driving I guess you could say... but comparing bike riders again car drivers is a bit unfair. 95% of car drivers don't try crazy overtaking manuovers, risking everyone around them - but there will be exceptions. Spyda
It's actually a good idea to weave on the road... it makes you more visible Surely if you ride in the center of the lane as you should do, you;ll be just as visable. I've never seen learners weaving across the road!...

I can see why they get cheap insurance!!!!!
