Suprachargedtt
hi i have had a custom decat exhaust and twin hybrids and some other bits fitted and i want to get a fmic at a later date. do i need to remap my ecu? i have a boost controller but its not been connected yet, at the moment ive been told to wait till i get the intercooler before i re-map the ecu but as i use it daily would this cause any harm? also is remapping the best way to go? how much is it? or should i just get an uprated ecu? as you can guess i dont have much knowledge on this so any sensible comments would be appreciated cheers
DaveRex
can you remap the stock ecu though, I didn't think you could so I think that answers your question Someone correct me if I am wrong Dave
Nick_TC
You cant re-map the stock ecu, but if your running stage 3 hybrids you must be running bigger injectors, and thus some sort of piggy back fuel computer??
Suprachargedtt
as far as im aware im only running the turbos and they have put in some new wastegates? they have also done something with the actuators so i cant over boost? if that makes sense i dont really understand it all!?! so would i need the bigger injectors then? how much is an aftermarket one? i really dont know which way to go on this, the car seems to run fine at the moment? but i have the red warning triangle light up? Nick_TC
Ah, well if your only running low boost then you wont need any bigger injectors, but then that defeats the object of having hybrid's.
Suprachargedtt
ahhh its all on a budget at the mo im just getting extra bits as and when i can afford them etc. im just getting confused with this re-mapping business, so if i cant remap the stock ecu can i get an aftermarket one that i can re map everytime i get a new bit?? what sort of price are they and how much would it cost to map it each time? am i making sense? Nick_TC
The stock ecu is a very clever piece of kit and learns certain things for itself, but with hybrids, bigger injectors e.t.c you'll either need a piggy back fuel computer, which trims the fuelling e.t.c or a standalone ecu, which i think they start at around £1000, which is totally reprogrammable, as for the mapping costs, i dont know, the first mapping session will be quite expensive, but then when you add extras, it wont be too much for just a tweak. Suprachargedtt
mmm £1000 bit expensive for me! do i need to re-map the ecu then? or just get bigger injectors? i just wanna be able to put my foot down without blowing anythin up or causing any damage. seems to be the more i get the more i need? i have a boost controller that needs to be set up aswell as its not even connected at the mo. i think i need to give thor a call to see if they can sort it out? cheers for the info tho, im tryin to cram it all into my little brain and im begginin to understand it now
Nick_TC
From what I've read and learnt on here, the J-spec mkiv tt can safely run 1.2bar on the stock injectors and stock turbos, but with stage 3 hybrids you'll have to run alot less boost. You cannot re-map the stock ecu, end of story. What you really need is bigger injectors, bigger IC and a fuel computer, then you can get your boost controller wired in and up the boost. You hit the nail on the head, the more you buy the more you need, Ive just spent over 2k on my mkiii and its costing another 1k + to get it all fitted and running right, thats more than the cars worth, but as long as it gives a BPU'd mkiv a run for its money ill be happy Hopefully someone more knowledgeable about mkiv's will be along soon. Hmm. Hybrids, by definition, use the stock housing. They have built-in wastegates. Well, the first turbo does anyway. So I don't see how they could be replaced. And actuators don't have anything to do with overboosting. Removing the cats will make a j-spec overboost, and hybrids will overboost to in that situation, without a restrictor ring. Quite aside from the lack of fuelling or intercooling upgrades, the whole thing has set alarm bells ringing for me. Who did the installation? Who supplied the hybrid turbos? Have you got a boost gauge? If so what does it read at WOT, 4000rpm+? Did you get the fuelling checked? Or just assurances that it was fine? -Ian
