Jake
I got done for no MOT on my bike. (I didn't realise it had turned three years old and now needed one). I got it MOT'd and then went to the police station with my docs but they nicked me anyway. I pleaded giuilty by post and was fined a grand total of £30. No points or costs. Bargain I thought. Jake
So if someone hasn't got a valid MOT certificate covering that date, then they get a court summons 1. if they go to the police station with the rest of the documents 2. if they do bugger all and get the summons through the post. So what is the gain of going down the first route? Either way you're looking at a magistrate without a valid MOT right? If you don't present your other docs at the police staion you have commited a further offence and will also get summonsed for no insurance as well as no MOT. If it's just no MOT you don't have to go to court yourself, you can plead guilty by letter.

You may want to check this further, but I think you'll find having no MOT is a simple motoring offence, whereas not producing your documents when requested by a policeman is a criminal offence. So it depends on what you are happy to have on you record......

tbourner
Also worth mentioning that (at least in my local station on at least one of the shifts) they usually don't bother chasing up producers if they're just handed out to the people they stop - unless of course it was for anything in particular (like you mentioned a fine attached to it?) If there was no fine and just a random stop with producer given as you didn't have docs - there's not much point going in as they are likely to not chase it (it's up to the issuing officer to check with the local station whether they came in). Kranz
No MOT is a minor traffic matter, especially if its only just lapsed a day or two before. If it does go to a hypothetical magistrate he/she'd be a co*k to throw a big penalty your way. However, fail to produce is serious sh1t & can lead to disqualification, especially if taken into consideration with other offences (no MOT for example?). Don't blag it, its not worth it. You won't pass under the radar as if its on a ticket its likely the local ticket office has it on the system waiting for the fine & the HORT2 (the form that's filled in with your document details when you turn up) to come back, otherwise its a NIP in the post m8. If it was just a producer, possibly could slip through the radar as its the PC's responsibility to keep a check on when the HORT2 comes back, but in all honsety most are pretty hot on this. Good hypothetical luck!
Jake
I've heard another dodge is to say that you'll produce the docs at some other station in another county. Apparently whatever paperwork is involved between the police forces of two different counties means that the cop usually can't be bothered and you never hear anything more about it. I don't know if this still works now that they're more computerised though.
Kranz
Jake, the person has to nominate a police station to take it to within 7 days, so a simple phone call on day 8 usually works. If they haven't taken it to the nominated station but some other one on the outher side of the country... well, its up to them to prove in court & tell the mag why they didn'ty go to the one they said. Are you sure about this? What if they are not traffic cops, but rookies?
Whitesupraboy2
2 choices 1. Take the £30 or £60 fine 2. take this big risk for something small / minor offence and maybe get done for not producing all documents. Going to court and risk the judge having a bad day and deciding to take it out on you.
