1st Turbo Dodgy Sound !!

Hi All,

 

Drove to work the other night and the car was fine. When I was driving home though the 1st turbo was making a seriously sus noise (not too different from the turbo failure wav on mkiv.com). The sound file on mkiv.com seems to be a one pitch whereas mine changes from a high pitched sound to low depending on how many revs I am doing. Kindof like one of those dodgy swanee flutes with the handle at the bottom that changes the tone. Also there is no boost at all from the first turbo and haven't even tried to see if the second turbo still works.

 

What do you guys reckon. Shall I get my wallet out now or later ? :)

im with osso on this one, sounds like popped air hose, but it could always be a nice £2000 bill :)

Well thats what I am hoping for. :)

 

The main difference between the sound its making and the one from mkiv.com is that mine changes pitch with acceleration whereas the one from mkiv.com is always the same and sounds much harsher. Where abouts is this pipe ? Will it be noticable by just checking round the turbos ?

Is it pipe number 1 or 2 that maybe suspect ? I have had a quick check of both of them and there is nothing obvious >:/

I take it that this is the pipe then ? I have had a check, but its a bit too dark to see really :) If I run the engine with the bonnet open, should I be able to hear where its coming from ?

Thanks for all the help osso.. I'll have a proper check tomorrow in the light and let you know.. Now you mention it though, the top part of hose No. 4 did feel a bit strange. Fingers crossed that thats all it it then..

 

When a turbo does go, is it likely to go all of a sudden with no warning, or is it usual for them to start acting strange before anything happens ?

PS.. There is no smoke coming from the exhaust at all when driving.

No probs, apparently my second turbo has gone on my Supra, and i didnt have any signs of blue smoke out the exhaust, or the death whine, or even sign of oil in the air intake or intercooler pipes... but Paul E's Turbo's went with a bang! and suffocated everybody in a huge black cloud of smoke! some people said it was like smoking a cuban cigar :D

 

But from what you're describing it sounds like a loose hose..

Heey,

just a quick question, is there a difference in the sound when the engine is cold and warm? I have noticed my turbos woosh quite loud when cold (just above 3000 revs, not often I go above this when the engine is cold, but happens sometimes) and when the engine is warmed up its OK again.

 

Now with the cold and wet weather and all, does make some difference...

Haven't had a chance to check the hoses yet as I am at work, but with the bonnet open, giving it a rev, it appears the sound is not coming from the hose area, but coming from where the turbos are ( up right from number 1 hose on the top picture above). Is there still a chance that this may be due to a hose failure or not ?

See Attached I did wonder whether the hose where the red arrow is pointing to looks somewhat twisted as tho its collapsing under the sleave. what i'd do is either take off the hose and check it, very easy to do, 2 minute job, unscrew where the yellow arrows are, or you could get some soapy water and place it where the red lines are and see if it bubbles when the engine is running..

I have checked the hose you pointed out osso. No holes or perished parts of it at all, however there is a very light coating of something inside it. It doesn't smell like engine oil though, its more like WD-40 and its a really thin coating as if it has been wiped on rather than pouring through.

 

If I remove the big pipe that goes into the ETCS bit and rev over 2k so the turbo kicks in, I can feel loads of air coming out of it. Does this mean that the turbo itself is still working ?

 

Are there any other things I can check ?

Errr...yep (but thanks for reminding me...sob!)

 

Sorry to say it's a costly one m8...we now do hybrids which are going on my car £1500+vodka

 

Std turbos from toyo are like £2000!! Gulp!

 

There will be some thin deposits of oil within your induction pipes - nothing to worry about

 

Sounds like you need to get yourself down to someone who knows what they are looking for asap!!

Just taken my car along to a local tuning place. The guy had a look over it and said that they would need the car for a few hours to check over all vacuum hosing and to check the impellers from the turbos, and to check the play they have in them. Then the turbos would need to be sent off to be checked >:/ Their not going to be able to check it in till next week anyway so I am guna spend the weekend hunting down and checking every damn inch of hose work under that bonnet !!! :)

 

Anyone here that can recommend a garage in the Kent area (I come from Dartford) that would be good to check this out ?

Hi Guys,

 

Just had another check of my car (which is living at work until Thursday when its booked into the garage cuz it sounds way too dodgy to drive) and found oil in the exhaust at the rear. I take it that this must mean that its definately something seriously wrong with the turbo !!! I think bearings or sommat.. boohoo.

The garage are going to check all hose work etc, then if the turbo is suspect, send it off for reconditioning / repair. While its in there though I might aswell get something else done to it and am thinking about getting a different exhaust as my current one has a hole somewhere i think. What do you recommend ?
