Has anyone ever retro fitted a Smog pump, carbon canister or aditional cats to a vehicle?

A *friend of a friend* may need to ESVA his car and there is no chance it will pass without some hefty emissions control. sadly for him Nissan skipped the EGR system that we supra owners have.

anyone got any ideas or tips?

When you say "additional cats" do you mean the car was never designed to have them? Sounds unlikley to me.

I'd suggest putting the cats back in and maybe considering some kind of aftermarket fuel controller to run a "pussycat" map specifically for the ESVA. I'm pretty sure the big single guys might do something similar come MOT time. ot sure what they will actually test on the ESVA.

Emissions gear that wasn't part of the OE spec will all have to be controlled and mapped somehow. Its not just a case of bunging the bits on.

if this is the same car as is in the 'off-topic' thread then i think the emissions will be the least of his worries i'm afraid.

not a good position to be in, feel quite sorry for the guy. who imported it for him? was he told he could register it over here?

yep same car. just trying to help he sort it out. he's a very resourceful guy and was pretty sure he could find away to get it in. he's come close but has been thwarted by pen pushers and those who think a caravan can't have 400bhp!

he doesn't have a model report so he needs to have and ESVA done. this is like and SVA, but much mroe invloved. it costs about 2k and there are no retests. just 2k a go. so if it fails, it's very expensive very quickly.

he wants to be as sure as he can before he goes for the test that the car will pass. he can do all easy stuff, tyres, headlamps etc. but it's just the noise and emissions that worry him. he's got a power fc for it so the ecu can be set up to give as little emissions as possible without risking running lean.

he wanted to add an aditional cat with a carbon canister or american style air injection (smog pump) to help bring down the CO2, NO2 and HC.

An ESVA is not a substitute for a model report. If the car is '97 or later, a model report is required as part of the ESVA.

If it's '97 or later I don't see how it can be registered with no model report (until it's 10 years old).

There must be a reason why there is no model report for the GT-R. Surely one of the professional importers would have tried already.
