edd_t
damn easy i think. especially for home use. a lot less setup aswell than using a PC with XP on. although less people will be able to help you when theres a problem with it!

Nick
They are bl**dy brillant. All I can really say is, it just works. I bought a wireless keyboard (Apple) and Logitec mouse and it worked first time, no need to install drivers or any of that nonsense. It even detected the wireless internet and sorted that out for me. You won't need any virus of spyware software either. The new ones have dual boot so you can run windows if you want to for specialist applications. For internet and media the Apple OS (OS X) wins hands down, it's so easy to use and much more powerful. I've been using windows for years and it doesn't take any getting used to at all. Not only that, but the build quality is so much better, and the display and look and feel of everything too. I can rave all day, but to make up your mind you need to sit down with one and have someone show you what it can do. I was taking the mick out of my mate for ages until he did just that...then I got my wallet out http://store.apple.com/Apple/WebObjects/ukstore
Ian W
i can feel a purchase coming on soon Nick, cheers. what spec is yours out of curiosity?
Nick
I've got a 15" Powerbook (1.67 Ghz), now replaced by the Macbook Pro. Don't be fooled by the processor speed either. The operating system works in a far more efficient way to Windows. It boots up, shuts down and generally does everything so much quicker. It hasn't crashed yet either, although they're not perfect, a mate of mine has had to do the odd reboot where it's got itself in a twist. No where near on the same scale of hassle as MS though. I've yet to have, or meet anyone that has had compatibility issues. I've used memory sticks, external HDD's, word files, spreadsheets, pictures, moves, pdf files etc etc all taken from my PC and put onto my Mac. Only difference is everything looks sooooo much better ! One of the project managers here has just bought an iMac. He fancies himself as a bit of a windows guru, and was more than a little taken aback at what it could do.... Find a shop that sells them and have a play, the only way to know for sure if you want to make the change. It's true there's not many games available so not a choice for the gamer. I've got World of Warcraft though, which as far as I'm concerned is the best game I've *ever* played and I haven't got time for any other games anyway If you like I can PM you the email address of a mate of mine that's a real Apple guru, he can answer any questions you have, as I'm just a novice really. Ian W
thanks for the offer but no need for the email address (yet, anyway!). will be heading down to the nearest PC world to mess about with their ibook's me thinks! cheers again.

Nick
No problem mate. The only downside though, is for some reason Apple feel the need to try and rip you off with extra memory. I bought my extra RAM from these guys. If you get one I can recommend them, just select your iBook model and the amount you want and that's it, no messing around. Took 5 minutes to fit too. http://www.crucial.com/uk/

edd_t
Dell are made on the cheap! I've pulled um apart and the parts are by monkey companies. their after sales service is terrible. the price they quote you is never correct you always end up paying more, and they do annoying non standard things that make it hard to upgrade hardware etc in the future... Ian W
you're telling me mate, i've heard a different story from every single person i've spoken to and one of them actually works for a very large IT company contracted to do our IT work for us like supplying pcs and maintenance etc. etc. he actually said i couldn't go wrong with a DELL which others have absolutely slated! peter richards
i suppose your going to get conflicting views , its just not making a mistake and wasting good money , as i know bugger all about pcs . but at least we can take the advice on board , which will help us decide
edd_t
Acer are ok if you want something on the cheap. but dont expect them to last if you start playing games that demand a lot of power or if you travel around alot either.

I think it's pot luck to a certain extent where PC's are concerned. I've used Dell and HP at work and I couldn't tell them apart to be honest. I had a very bad experience with a Compaq, and a mate had an absolute dog of an AJP, where as mine was fine...
Ian W
yup, i suppose everyone will have different experiences with one pc being as good (or as bad) as the next. still erring towards an ibook or powerbook now though.
