Laptop recommendations

Recommended Posts

Okay guys.

as it seems a few others are having similar problems, my home pc is about to give up the ghost and die on me any day now.

as such i may be looking to get myself a laptop (mainly for space saving and the fact i don't need a top spec pc for games or anything like that).

where's the best place to get one and what's the minimum spec i should look for given i only use it for the web, itunes and a bit of photo printing/editing etc.

any help much appreciated.

acer makes brilliant laptops, probably better then dell

never go for a celeron laptop or pc as its the entry level pentium,

try and get wireless, it is flexable and cheaper to buy with the laptop than upgrading later

if going for a laptop try your best if it is a pentium 4 to go for 2800 or over, if its a pentium M or centrino try and go for 740 or above

ram on a laptop must be over 512mb try and get at least 1mb

a decent laptop can cost but you will get a good one for about £700-1k anything under that then your gonna be slow and no matter what people say that it wont bother me, wait till you put office and anything else on it and see how slow it gets,

athlon makes good chips but you have to look at getting the highest athlon for speed

I agree that Acers are good, but they use the same old Chicony-style keyboard as most other companies. My number one would be a Thinkpad T or Z series, absolutely the finest there is. The professional end Dells are very good too (Latitude D6x0).

Agree on the Celerons - steer cleer, but I would also say steer clear of P4s unless you like big fat hot laptops with poor battery life. Centrino (Pentium-M) or mobile Athlon 64 is the way forward.

PC World stuff ain't so good - Packard Bell etc.

Not a fan of the VAIOs unless it's a high-end one. The cheaper ones really are shite.

from experience dont go Dell or Sony. Dont go to PC world and dont get celeron! part of my job at work is looking after the company laptops etc etc.

Acer are ok if you want a cheap laptop with lots of bells and whistles.

But if you want a laptop thats gonna last, go for HP Compaq NX series or a Toshiba comes in close 2nd.

agree with you on everything there, however with athlon 64 you have to go for a high end one too as i bought one for my dad and silly me i never looked into it on great detail and got him the 3000 boy is that slow, p4 is good but battery life is a problem

and vaios are just shit reagardless imho its a fashion item to prove you have more money than actual sense, sorry to people who have them but unless they have came down in price since i last looked at them, you can get sometimes twice as good for the same money if you bargain hunt

if you want power and not to fussed for battery life go for a p4 but if you want the best compomise go for a centrino or high athlon

and 100% agree with carlos pc world dixons comet argos etc they are all shit and rip off merchants

I recently bought a Toshiba Satellite Pro M70 Equim with a Pentium-M Centrino 1.73 GHz Processor, 512MB DDR SDRAM, 60GB Hard Drive,

Dual Layer DVD Drive, 15" TruBrite Widescreen TFT and and integrated wireless LAN, was a shade under £800. can whole heartedly recommend that model.

HP's the backligher fails (i have 10+ units with a failed backlighter). Tosh'es - dont like them, have had 2 fail out of 4 with system board problems.

Get an ibm think pad, its the only laptop I would recommend( however I do have an acer at home!)
