Urgent Ecu Help!!!

Recommended Posts

For the last couple of weeks (intermittently) I've had my o/d light flashing on the dashboard and code 42 reported by the ECU (wheel speed sensor). So today, I've been looking around the ECU to look for any loose wires around the ECU where the speed convertor box is.

Anyway, I didn't really do anything, just prod some of the soldered joins, but when I came to start the engine, it won't start!!! It's turns over fine, but just doesn't start.

I've undone the ECU connectors and checked the soldering and it all looks fine.

Please can someone tell me what to do!

For anyone that lives in or around Cambridge, there's a free drink and pub lunch in it for you if you can come and help me!!! I'm in Cottenham and my house is dead easy to find.

Cheers,

James.

I've tested the fuses in the engine bay and they are okay. I tried disconnecting the battery for a while then reconnected, but the car still won't start.

I think power is getting to the ECU as all the normal lights illuminate when the ignition is on. I also tried the ECU diagnostics and it reported no error codes (constant flashing).

The two boxes spliced into the ECU loom (TRL VFCC and Intec speed converter) seem well soldered in place. It doesn't seem likely they are causing the problem. They are both connected securely to a ground point as well.

I'm getting quite worried now that I might have done some serious damage.

Im only down the road mate, but im just getting to grips with the 7m-gte not the 2jz-gte.

Have you tried the basics, and checked for spark and fuel??

I could come round mate no probs, two heads are better than one, im on call which is a small problem, would just have to leave if got a job.

Nick,

That would be fantastic if you could spare a bit of time tomorrow.

All I've checked really is the ECU connector, a bit of the wiring loom and fuses. I'm hoping there's just a loose wire that I've not spotted. I'm fairly sure it's electrical as the wiring around the ECU is all I touched, and before this the car has always started first time.

I'm sending you a PM now...

Did you put the plastic cover on too tight and squash any of the looms ?

I think in the past due to VFCC and SLD it was a little tight getting the cover back on to protect all the gubbins under there and the car would not start. I removed the cover made sure all the gubbings/wires were not trapped and then re-fitted the cover.

Worked for me :)

Actually I might have done that. When it didn't start, I took the cover back off again and haven't put it back since. I did put the screws back in though - in case they are used as grounding points.

I think I'll have to check the ECU connector and wiring in more detail to look for any squashed wires or ones that have been pulled out of the connector a tiny bit.

Cheers,

James.

James I have a spare Auto ECU we could try as long as we can be sure there are no shorts. As I know it is a good one I have used it in my car.

You are about 20minutes from me but I am going to be busy next week and at Pod on Sunday.

My guess would be a fracture inside a wire casing. I remember Chris Wilson found this at the end of a mammoth search when someone had fitted RLTC. ARRPITA you will have to check continuity at between the connector and beyond the additions you listed, I would suspect those wires first. Do you have a manual so you can check the wiring diagram, some wire will not be important and not cause this problem so you can narrow your search down.

The loom connector is all the way home in its socket???

Okay, cheers Nick, I'll do that. I'll be up early trying to fix it :)

Phil, thanks for the suggestions. I have the ECU connector diagram so I've got an idea which wires would stop it starting and which ones don't matter.

I really need to get it working as it's my only car and also it's meant to be going to Chris Wilson on Friday.
