Guest chiefvinso
A little help needed regarding the above. The drivers side catches and so does the passenger but at speed the passenger side raises enough to lift the bonnet! I have checked both catches and they work however after closing and trying to pull the bonnet up it raises by about 1/2 inch (which will let in the air). Have put some tape around the latch and it has lowered the height it rises but it looks like a new catch is needed. Anyone know who and how easy it is to do? Cheers, Keith
michael
It sounds like the passenger side isn't catching, it might be hitting the latch but if it's not dropping that extra fraction of a mm it might not be secure. First thing to check is the rubber stoppers, these can be wound up and down to allow the bonnet to close lower, it may be that the passenger one is currently set a little too high. Failing this you can replace the bolts on the latch to allow you to lift it and ensure a proper fit. I posted up about this last week but nobody noticed http://www.mkivsupra.net/vbb/showthread.php?t=58267&
michael
Duplicate post due to a weird 'parser' error
Guest chiefvinso
TBH I didnt think that this would be covered on the site. But I have read you threadnow and it makes sense. Mine closes ok and everything lines up but if I put my finger under neath and lift it rises. So the height of the catch can be raised by undoing the two bolts? Guest chiefvinso
As you are in west yorkshire is your location far from the boro? Maybe I could pay you to do it???
michael
I'm in Leeds so not exactly local to the 'boro I'm afraid but it's a really easy thing to do yourself if you have a suitable spanner and the bolts - I'm happy to offer any assistance I can
Guest chiefvinso
Cheers, these bolts - can you let me know where to get them and do they raise the height of where the catch sits? THanks for you help as this has really been annoying me.
michael
I got mine at B&Q - about £1.50 for a pack of them, 6mm, 20mm long was fine. The standard ones force the position of the catch, by swapping to ones with normal thread and no tapered section you can just lift it a little. It all becomes fairly obvious once you start tinkering around
Guest chiefvinso
Cheers, I'll take one out and have a look in BnQ. When you say no tapered section does that mean the thread runs all the way to the head of the bolt?? My inteligence on this field is low!!
michael
The ones I got are threaded all the way up, the main thing is that they are normal bolts without the centering taper part Toyota use. The hardest bit was finding suitable large diameter washers, I had to take a few things apart at home to get them as B&Q had none. What you basically need is: http://www.screwfix.com/sfd/i/cat/88/p1544588_l.jpg http://www.screwfix.com/sfd/i/cat/90/p1543090_l.jpg (I think they call them 'set screws' rather than bolts, a pan head machine screw will also do the trick)
uk-rich
i did the same with mine, worked a treat
Guest chiefvinso
Are the washers used because the ones you have are too long?
michael
No, the hole from the car panel to the catch is quite large so the washer is to ensure that is covered.
Guest chiefvinso
Ah I see, I suppose its a case of taking one out and getting one to fit and learning. At least I know that my problem will hopefully be resolved!! Cheers
AntD
Thanx for the info michael.Just yesterday when tinkering with my car I noticed the bonnet isn't closing properly on the drivers side .I played with the rubber stops a bit,but that didn't solve it.Might have a go next at replacing the bolts:)
Guest chiefvinso
I replaced the bolts and found some washers, job sorted - so cheers Michael for the info. Might have to spray the bolsts and washers as it looks like I have a bit of bling going on under there!! LOL
