Kopite
hey right can someone explain this to me? i thought the VVTI was somethin toyota did on the later NA models to spruce them up a bit and give 25bhp more. but ive seen a few ppl sayin theyve got Twin Turbo VVTIs. so how many horses are in one of those things then? i thought all the bhps for the mkiv were pretty constant. still a newbie so its probably one of those qs that newbs ask and is dead obvious! Marco
I think the TT VVTI's have standaard about 340-350 BHP.
Paul Laing
I left one of these for dead halfway down the 1/4 mile at Elvington yesterday. And i have no boost controller, just a few bits and bobs. Paul

Kopite
cool, so are they more sought after then? were the VVTIs an option or will any 97/98 TT be a VVTI anyway? just wonderin if that affects the insurance premium
Paul Laing
it was a TT Jap 6 Speed VVTI Best he got i think was 13.9, my best was 13.4 so left him quite a bit. After about 15 runs i got an average of around 13.5 something. But the one i raced had a standard exhaust on.... Paul
eyefi
they r more awkward to tune, can b done (more expensive).
Paul Laing
All the late specs are VVTI, the ones with the new dials inside and the clear lights etc. Paul

Ian C
Originally posted by Paul Laing All the late specs are VVTI, the ones with the new dials inside and the clear lights etc. Paul No they aren't 1996 ones are facelifted non-VVTi. VVTi was put into the turbo version to get around ever more restrictive emissions regs. It added midrange but nothing to peak outputs so the stats didn't appear to change. UK specs died a death before the facelift so none of these are lifted or VVTi. -Ian
Kopite
so if youre plannin on moddin a supra to say 500hp, is a VVTI more hassle/expense? what is the exact diff between the 2 engines, what does the valve timin actually mean performance wise? ta for the replies
Paul Laing
i know the facelift ones arn't UK! But i thought all facelift supras had the VVTI engines as the facelifts were 98 onwards..... The UK spec allways had the normal engine, i know that mate! Paul

TRD3000GT
Ive got a 98 VVTI with just HKS Hyper exhaust system and was keeping up with a 94 Supra with HYBRID turbos, he just started to edge away after 100 , but I thought it was pretty impressive! he was pretty shocked! Soonto_HAS_soop
VVTi's started to get dropped into soops in mid '97, as mine is early 97 and is non VVTi. Ben..

Again, the 280bhp figure is quoted by Toyota Japan because there was something (either between the manufacturers and the government, or the manufacturers amongst themselves) that meant that they weren't allowed to make more than 280BHP stock in Japan. A J-spec TT is still well over 280BHP, and is usually (correct me if I'm wrong) closer to the 320-330 ballpark of the UK spec. I'll see in a few weeks time when I have mine dyno'd as stock. -p
Soonto_HAS_soop
I would say that that was about right pulse. The main reason why the J Specs have got the ceramic turbos is cos in Jap land they aren't allowed to go any faster than 112mph, so may as well make them get there quicker. UK will have a greater top end with the steel internals IIRC. Ben..
