Chevy V8 Help

VELOCITY

Recommended Posts

Hi guys

Just took delivery of my Dax Tojero Cobra replica kit, I have a bit of a problem and wonder if someone out there can help.

The problem I have is the engine, I want a small block Chevy V8 5.7L.

I can purchase one with over 350bhp but its a whopping £8000!!!!

I want to go the cheap route and maybe buy a second hand engine or car with the engine already in it and rebuild it myself. The problem i have got is i have never rebuilt a V8 in my life and only have limited experiance in rebuilding engines, are there any tips, books bits of advise anyone can help with??? :sos:

Cheers

There is a place in Wymondham, Norfolk which imports and services Yank tanks... have a google or PM Soop Dogg as he might be able to help - Soop used to know the guy.

You might be able to source a block from this garage in Wymondham.

Awesome car the Dax, probably the best replica Cobra you can get.

You might want to have a word with geoffvalenti, he's an ex-muscle car owner and has a lot of experience with US V8's.

Cheers guys!!!

I will contact geoff as he is only around the corner!

Chevy is a great engine and very tuneable and free revving, you can rebuild one easily and there are many books on doing so, you should have no problem getting a 350 ci (Aprox 5.7L) to over 350bhp as there are many many bolt on goodies available for these.

I have a 400ci V8 in my Pontiac which is giving 320 bhp at the rear wheels with few mod's. Cam, Roller Rockers, Carb and a little head work.

Have Fun!

Someone mention my name :D

The best place, locally, for spares is American Autoparts in Thornton Heath

http://www.americanautoparts.co.uk/

They're bound to have books about rebuilding small block Chevys.

If you go down there, try to speak to Steve Thompson, what he doesn't know about V8s, isn't worth knowing.

You may also want to speak to Jon Ellison, (jellison) on the Pistonheads site. He's recently stuck a 350 LS6 motor into a TVR Chimaera, so will be probably able to advise of any obvious pitfalls. You can usually find him on the Chimaera or general TVR forums.

The earlier, carburettor equipped, versions of the small block Chevy, are simple OHV pushrod engines. They're not too complex to work on but obviously require the same clean assembly conditions as any other engine.

There's a wealth of tuning parts available, from mild to wild, to build anything from a mild mannered street engine to a blown monster :flame:

Anything around an honest 300hp+ will give the Cobra's chassis a good workout, and if you can get the power down, shattering performance :ecstatic:

Anytime you want to chat cars, I'm always up for it, I think you know where I am :)
