uk-rich
need to change my coolant, i know about the drain on the rad, but i seem to remember that some one mentioned one somewhere else ? or i may have been pissed
JohnA
The other one is hard to reach. Just use the one under the rad, refill, run it a bit then flush again.
LeeT
the other one is under the exhaust manifold and a right pain to get to. i'd do what john said if i were you
Terminator
The other drain point is under the turbos. It is a bit of a pig to get at. If you want to do a proper flush you should take it out as draining from the rad will not pull everthing of the rear of the block and heater matrix out of the system. That is why Toyota put it there. I can't remember the exact quantities but there was quite a bit left in the block once the rad drasn stopped, last time I did mine. I have some pics of its location some where. If you have a decent tool kit it should not be too much of a problem.
ardasaliah
http://www.mkivsupra.net/vbb/showthread.php?t=54379 read this- I did mine recently and used just the tap on the rad. Managed to remove 7 litres! capacity is 9 litres. use toyota red only
Bob
Sorry for thread hijacking, and apologies if this seems a daft question; but what do most people tend to do with their coolant when they drain it? I only ask 'cos mine needs doing soon as well.
JohnA
What you shouldn't do for sure is let it flow to storm drains, because these are not cleaned before returning to the ground.
Bob
Would stop the rivers and fish from freezing though . . .
JohnA
Previous versions of coolant used to contain a lot of methanol (just like windscreen fluid), so that was unhealthy enough. With new legislation this has changed a couple of years ago, but it still isn't all roses and happy bunnies jumping about. Theoretically you should take it to a recycling centre, along with used engine oil etc. In practice I'm still fuming from learning that my council (bromley) despite the 'green' credentials and fancy fluff --- they consolidate the 'recycled' bits later on and bury them in the ground along with everything else. Grrr... Apparently it costs a lot more to process the plastic, glass and paper that we separate, and the whole 'recycling' scheme is ultimately a sham:complain:
uk-rich
right im changing my thermostat as well so is this as good as pulling the drain plug under the manifold (im single so a little easier to get at) where exactly on the block is the other drain (i take it its a screw in bung) on a lighter note i am piss wet through, bottom hose came off easier than expected !!!!
