Adam W
Even unmapped at 0.6 bar boost my car is now much faster than the standard brakes can cope with! I want to try going for good pads and braided lines before spending out shedloads on a big brake conversion/bigger wheels. I've heard good things about the Porterfield pads on here and Paul Whiffin sells em for the Mk3. Should I go for fast road or race though? Obviously I want excellent stopping power (I can't activate the ABS until I get down to like 40mph at the moment so it's the brakes which are a problem rather than a the tyre grip) but it's important to me that they must work well from cold. Do the race pads just give more fade resistance or will I get more bite and stopping power from them?
Adam W
Heh heh, I just used the search button and found five big threads on this I think I'll go for the race pads unless someone wants to tell me different. I can cope with a bit of brake dust, its not like my car is in concourse condition anyway!
Branners
I would certainly recommend the race spec pads, I had the CW ones on my import and they were exceptional, no fade ever, stopped better than my UK spec does now so well worth it. Barry
Adam, As JB says, they are great. I'm just about to chuck a new set in too.
SkyJawa
JB, Can I just clarify - with these pads you're saying your import stops better than your UK with stock setup. I'm assuming with regards to the import, they were the stock jap spec brakes, just with the race pads, and your UK is standard braking wise? Just wondered as now I've got my aero, I really have to haul to a stop, and anything that can make the brakes better is fine by me! Cheers Neil
Doug
The Porterfields are great IMO, I have the fast road ones in my car and Matt H and I did back to back stopping tests on each others cars and found there was not much in it. You do have to put a small cycle through them before they really bite tho.
SkyJawa
Doug was that test J-Spec brakes with the race pads against a standard UK?
Adam W
Is it worth putting expensive uprated pads on the rear? They only do about 10% of the work anyway, it seems a bit pointless to me . . .

Cheers Neil they were indeed stock import brakes, braded lines and decent brake fluid. My UK spec is apparently running on Porterfield Fast Road but Im not so sure. So the import brakes on race pads were the equal of the UK spec stock brakes, and possibly UK brakes with porterfield fast road. They do generate a LOT of heat when pushed hard and do make a bit of noise, so check with somebody who has the race pads to see what you think. Just for additional info, I was using the Chris Wilson race pads not the porterfields, I think Barry is now using the Porterfields so can tell us if they are any different. Sharpie
I have the CW inters (Fast Road) on mine (UK Car) and they are very good, no extra dust and no squeal (S/S lines and DOT 5.1). Chris R has the race spec CW pads (J-spec), he did a post on this......was well impressed BUT, the race ones do squeal a lot, so Chris R says. Edit: Correct Link http://www.mkivsupra.net/vbb/showthread.php?s=&threadid=3941&highlight=race+pads Talking MKIV tho! HTH
SkyJawa
Cheers chaps (and sorry for the hijack ) I think I'll be investing in some race pads and braided lines in the very near future!

Darren
I have Porterfield RACE pads. They work amazingly BUT they squeal in traffic like a stuffed pig and im getting loads more brake dust which is also a devil to get off my alloys. But the car stops......UK fronts next for me though... Darren
