Guru
Probably coming from the belts as its cold. Not sure of what can happen damage wise or even if its a problem lol.....
DShox
tighten fan belt or water pump.
Digsy
You can't tighten the belt. It's auto tensioned. Th etensioner might be on its way out or there may just be some moisture on the belt. Some owners have fixed similar problems by spraying a little WD40 on the belt but I prefer to keep WD40 and rubber well apart. Keep an eye on it for now. If the belt snaps you will get plenty of warning lights because the alternator will stop. PAS will also go. You will need to pull up sharpish because the water pump will also stop working but as long as you stop quicky no damage should be done.

suprattgaz
I had a very similar squeak - went to the trouble of changing belts, then tensioner and it was still there. Then one day there was an almighty bang under the bonnet and the fan had smashed to bits! Also had lost all fan belt accessories (power steering, water pump etc.) Drove very caferfully home, it wasn't far, and left it on the driveway. Cutting a long story short the rubber had perished on the crankshaft pulley that runs the fan. ie: the pully on the bottom end that the fan belt runs around is made of two separate rings of metal, and a 2mm thick piece of rubber holds the inner and outer together (it is there to take away wobble and large loads from the bottom end). It was spinning inside the pulley, but untill it actaully slipped off the front - smashing the fan on the way - i didn't have a fucking clue what it was. Got another pulley and fan from scrappies, and £70 later I had a no squeak supe!! It was K plate before anyone asks, and in showroom condition. Get it changed asap dude....if it goes and flaps around inside your engine bay this is what will cause the most damage..... worse case scenario it can rip off pipes, smash into things, crack plastic bits....shatter fan etc
UltraFlynn
I had what sounded like a belt squeaking when the car warmed up a bit. I didn't really worry about it because winter had just started and belts squeak a bit in the winter ..... .... and then my crankshaft pulley blew up. Oh fabulous. Very lucky not to had any damage to the radiator, SMIC, hoses, pipework. But still cost £400 to rectify.
suprattgaz
Same as mine - but how did it cost £400?

If its the dreaded front crank pulley then it needs replacing ASAP as it may well hurt something if it goes. IIRC the outer part of the pulley tends to move forward off the inner part, so you might well be able to see it before it actually fails. Try getting someone to start the engine while you are watching the front end drive and see whether anything looks amiss such as the crank spinning without the pulley rotating,
Parksy
Worried now... mines got the same squeak when it is first started up for ten minutes or so. As soon as it is warmed up it seems to just dispaear altogether. Appears to be coming from somewhere around the auxillary belt as far as I can tell. Thought the squeak was nothing to worry about from reading other threads... this has made me reconsider these posts slightly...

JohnA
my 93 cavalier has been squeaking on cold start up for the last 4 years and 40,000 miles later it still aint gone pop. your 93 cavvie hasn't got a crank pulley like this one though. Nor does it have an engine-driven fan. When it squeeks you know it's the fanbelt (dead easy to tighten, too!)
mikeyb10supra
Wise words from JohnA......get it changed, its resonably cheap and saves a lot of future aggro
