Ark
A little idea that just came up in conversation here: community based road policing. Works like this: Cars have a camera and button arrangement, allowing each motorist to trigger a snapshot and automatically report it to the authorities. Reportees get penalised based on accumulated reports. How many times have you been carved up by some nob, and wished you could report it? How many times has someone lashed down the outside lane in the pouring rain, and you've thought, there's a time and a place? How many times has someone passed you and you thought there's speeding and there's speeding? A few minutes worth of controversial debate for you. Alex
Why don't you fit a GPS locator to all the cars too...oh hang on...big brother anyone. I know what you're saying but video evidence isn't admissible for some daft reason (civil rights). So just report the number plate to the police's non-emergency number. Hmmm don't some cabs take photo's of their victims errr I mean customers.
Ian C
I think I'd get shot by the police on sight at the other end of the A11 to the end I started at I'd get photo's taken for: "Going faster than me" "Having a nicer car than me" "overtaking my BMW" "Going above 70mph!" "Going above 50mph!" "Being loud" "I pressed the wrong button" "I'm taking a picture of every single car that I see to clear the roads up" "Being younger than me" "Being older than me" It's just not gonna work, people are c**ts -Ian
Ark
True, but with sensible filtering it _might_ have a chance. If a single person is reporting 2000 other drivers per day, one can logically assume that he has it in for everyone else on the road and isn't a responsible reporter. Reverse the penalisation for particiants who abuse the scheme like that?
Class One
Community Roads Policing already exisists albeit in a different form. If you see bad driving you can report it to your local plod. However, this is low on their list of priority crime targets set by the Home Office each year, and Chief Constables and Policing Authorities have to allocate their limited resources to deal with performance targets that they are assessed against. And as Ian quite rightly states, there are soooo many nobheads out there that would just abuse the system to their own advantage or out of spite that it would be completely unworkable. Could you imagne your local community busybody shopping you everytime you start your car up because its "too loud" even though we don't think so? I can't see this one evry getting off the ground at the moment. There's far too much other important stuff to be getting on with. Even the Government has currently suspended the safer camera partnership as its become a bit of a political hot potato.
Ark
Even the Government has currently suspended the safer camera partnership as its become a bit of a political hot potato. It's only hot because everyone outside the partnerships hates them...but I'm sure that's got nothing to do with the growing body of evidence suggesting that they haven't improved accident rates! ivan
Shame they haven't suspended the ones that are already on the job though.
