JohnK
I have a friend that needs to get on the net in the UK and abroad (mainly india), he is with vodaphone. I have heard a lot about the data card vodaphone do and they are the only network to allow you to have a second sim with the same contract. Is this correct and is this the best way to get online with a laptop while away from any (computer) network? Cost within reason is not an issue. carl0s
hmm that's interesting. I didn't realise they would give you a second sim. The problem would be that it would be on the voice tarrif, which costs an astounding £2.36 per megabyte. On a data tarrif, it works out at around 75pence / megabyte. I have as yet been unable to get them to give me data-tarrif like prices on my voice tarrif. The problem is that I don't want a 3G datacard. I have a couple sat here already, but my laptop does the job flawlessly over bluetooth through my Sony Ericsson v600. I can even chat on the phone at the same time. No messy cards, and better battery life. The cards do work though.
toyotatom
Hi John, What you say is true, they do do a second sim for the same contract. I use Vodafone GSM for my work laptop in and around the Uk and that usually works fine although I dont send a lot of data on it from day to day. One of my mates works for Vodafone to and she travels all over the world and uses a Vodafone card you mentioned. Think the rates are quite reasonable to and she doesnt have a problem connecting with it. Depends what his needs are. For retrieving emails anytime anywhere blackberrys are pretty good. carl0s
They will tell you that you can 'pre-pay' for xx megabytes, which is in effect like pre-buying 100 sms messages, but this still works out expensive.

Cant remember the figures she said now but I think she only pays £45 a month and never exceeds the usage set on it. Again depends what your surfing for
carl0s
I use mine for remote support occasionally and it does work well. It seems that I can only chat & net where there is a 3G signal. GPRS (2G) won't work at the same time as phonecalls. Did I mention it's expensive? I had to download the drivers for an Intel Anypoint DSL modem at an office a short while ago. They were about 4mbs. Thats £10!!! Speed is impressive. You are redirected through a transparent proxy at IP 1.2.3.4 which re-compresses JPGs to pretty poor quality. And they redirect you away from Porn or anything remotely naughty, but this can be turned off.

I just wish I could have that as part of my VF400 voice tarrif.
carl0s
I have a customer who occasionally uses his datacard, and has to keep swapping it with his business partner. I wonder if the '2nd sim' would be possible here? As already mentioned, I have spare datacards.
