Tiptronic/auto Weirdness

Darren

Recommended Posts

While WOT testing on a private test track Tuesday night my car changed down from 4th to 3rd @ just under 160 leptons.  I was trying for 180+ on the clock but this curtailed the fun. My passenger and I nearly shat ourselves and I initially thought I'd blown the thing to pieces but it was only noisy cos it was redlining in third!:(

I must admit it does hold in third forever and ever and ever...I think someone else had this problem but want to know if they had any joy sorting it?? Cos I really need to sort mine.

Help!

The problem is 100% whoever the fool was who did the speed delimit. This is exactly what the VVT-i's do if the wrong de-limiter is fitted or fitted incorrectly.

I can offer you a correct de-limiter for self-fitment, or we can also fit it for you if required. PM me for prices if interested.

Yep.

We had a car here that was doing exactly what Darren describes. We ripped off all the crap that had been fitted and used an HKS de-limiter. Car is now perfect.

HOWEVER,

We have another tiptronic here at the moment (big single- mmmm) which again the customer complained of not shifting up into 4th when on WOT @ 150mph and although we've fitted an HKS unit to this one it's still playing up. So, we suspect either the speedo convertor or something else is still amiss.

So, in short, I'm not saying Pete has done anything wrong at all, it may just be that something else on the car is making his SLD play up. Bottom line is that it's deffo the SLD/speedo conversion.

Yes, at 155 genuine mph. You probably weren't far off it. However, removing the TRAC fuse not only disables the 155 limit but also renders the traction control inoperable which is no bad thing IMO.

Do some searches on past threads regarding this and you'll find that the Mk4 speedo is about as good as they get on the actual/indicated mph scale (when used with stock wheels/tyres)

I personally reckon you were about 5mph short of the limit.

My speedo only goes to 180! No markings at all past that point. Rob does your speedo go higher?

Nathan,

Thanks for you input. I think my car was SVA prepared at the same place as Robs so that makes some sense.

Lol.

No, my markings stop at 180, but there are various little pointers like the corner of the mph sticker, a mark on the plastic in the front etc. that can be lined up with the needle at the time and extrapolated when you have time later - assuming linear response, but then it's only a smidge over really.

Overclocking engineers trick that! I seem to remember my dad telling me similar stories when testing jet engines at Rolls Royce - only those things are measured by how long the flames get, once you go off the scale.
