terribleturner
You need to do a Direct Access. This will include a CBT too. 2 exams and about 5 days training for about £500 odd and any bike is yours. At 23 i got a ZXR6 and i think i was paying about £600 for insurance. tbourner
A bloke at work wants a GSXR650 as his first bike too. Are you all MAD!!!! Get a CG125 for a year first. Or at the very worst an Aprilia RS125.
qaisar
I bought a GSXR600 (K1) when i was 24 as my first bike after going the direct access route. insurance was very expensive (a little over £1000) but that dropped by almost 50% in my second year. Then bike got nicked the 3rd year and now insurance is expensive for me again tbourner although the GSXR600 has a lot of performance it is very easy to handle as the chassis is so good, Adi go for it mate you wont regret it, just make sure its kept secure
Nick
Don't you have to be 21 before you're allowed to do the direct access? I'm 30 now and got my first bike, GSX-R600 K5 last year when I was 29. Wanted the 750 but couldn't stomach the insurance, paying over a grand as it is. Treat the bike with respect and don't ride like a prat and you'll be fine. I knew if I bought anything less than a 600 I'd be bored after a month and they're a very nice handling bike and not too powerful for a first bike. Speak to Carole Nash for quotes, they're very professional and have the best rates.
tbourner
I thought sport bikes weren't the best for slow speed manouvres though? So not good on a test where you have to do turn in the road etc. Or do you get the choice to do it on a nude bike?
Nick
I turned up for lessons in my kit, and used the instructors bike (Suzuki GS500). Had around 50bhp and ideal for learning on and I used it for the test too. I wouldn't want to learn on a sports bike, god knows how'd you'd stick to speed limits
terribleturner
I don't think they'd let you take a test on a sports bike purely because of the turning circle on them.
Pig
Yep you do have to be 21, if you do your liscence you have to ride restricted to 33bhp for 2 years. thats even if you turn over 21 in those 2 yrs
