hi all, over the last two weeks i've seen five instances of the same problem.

ADSL router or networked internet connection..

IE wont connect to internet.. yet connects to network fine...

can ping router/network AND ping out to the net..

yet IE simply wont connect to the net..

I've seen too many of these in two weeks for it to be a coincidence..

anyone else getting this?

yep same problem with mozilla...

the router seems fine.. where two machines have been networked the unnaffected machine has no problems..so i can see the router is connected etc.

but for some reason the machine with the problem cannot conect to either router or internet, yet connects to the network fine.. odd. Like isay, i can ping both internet, network and router no probs..

I'm suspecting a dodgy windows update. I'm due to go out to yet another machine in half hour with similar problems :(

This happened on my mates machine the other day after he installed service pack 2.

I ended up wiping it and re-installing xp with service pack 2 and then installing the modem drivers. Its prob not the best fix but takes me less than an hour to re-install the entire pc, rather than spending hour+ fixing it.

Have had a few machines do this recently with spyware on them. Lets you ping, tracert web address but won't actually connect to any web pages.

Another thing would be to try a sites IP address instead of the name to see if that connects, also had this with spyware and had to remove the spyware and then run the winsock 2.0 fix to sort it out.

Question boys have you all checked the modem i.e. for virgin mine is a alcatel speedtouch connection icon on your desktop? to check and see if allows everyone on the pc to connect to internet or just me option. I always find that for some reason or another that can effect the connect of IE or what ever ISP you use? with XP only

cheers for the replies all.. but just to clarify a few things...

The router is fine.. other machines on the network can operate no probs and get on tinternet.. all lights as normal..

resetting the router does nothing...

Firewalls are off...

We mainly use d-link routers..perhaps an update is somehow knocking them out... i dunno. I'll keep an eye out and let you all know what i find..

The spyware thing is interesting though.. will check that out.

cheers

adi
