An absolute travesty!

This government is hell bent on getting rid of our manufacturing.

I am currently lobbying the DTI and UKT&I - believe it or not they are scrapping grant and funding to our exporters - who incidentally ONLY make up 65% of our GDP!

That's another subject.

Rover - as shambolic as they were - should not have been sold off as was.

Talk about wool, eyes and pulled over.

The government could and should have stepped in.

Whats happened to the work force?

We used to supply direct to Rover ourselves. As a UK manufacturer it is really tough times to be trading in the UK.

Alot of emphasis on eastern block and far eastern companies and major OEMS themselves [iE Ford Group, GM etc] are pushing for suppliers [like us] to look abroad for supply of parts in order to meet their strict cost down targets each year, or lose the business to our competitors - competitors in China etc. They seem to get the best of both worlds, major engineering support and quality assured products and far eastern prices.

The Govt should have stepped in with Rover without a doubt, if only to preserve a manufacturing presence in the UK, before it all gets outsourced

The whole thing is just depressing.

Hate to depress you even more - here's another little known FACT, this government is, all but, scrapping our UK manufacturers exporters grants and funding, and for what I hear you ask...........Well my friend they are calling it "Inward Investment" - in plain speak they are paying companies from target areas - inc. India and China - to come and set up business in this country.......in direct competition with the UK manufacturers.....That's where our taxes are headed as we speak.....And what is even more depressing is that they ain't listening to any one from our manufacturing sectors.

But surely that wouldn't work. The reason why a lot of business has been outsourced to china and india is because of the cheaper overheads - IE labour rates for example.

Raw materials, specifically metals - stainless steel and copper for example are set on the London Metal Exchange and you can't alter those. If they set up shop over here, their overheads would rocket through the roof, and they would not be able to compete in the same way?

Not totally sure, I think they just like obtaining access to places and taking photos... I was sent a link so thought I'd share. :)

Althought it's sad that Rover went bust, I'm not that bothered because they did make rubbish cars that didn't last long - it's a competitive market I'm afraid so what did they expect! :stickpoke I have more sympathy for the workforce and the suppliers to Rover, and very little for Rover itself.

Some of the photography of the site is pretty cool tho you have to admit. :)

if rover made a good product they would still be in buisness, simple as that.ford, vauxhall, toyota are still going because they make something the customer wants and i most cases works.

everyone i know thats had a rover has had nothing but trouble, very high cost of spares and servicing.between managament and union greed to line there own pockets and not think of the future they only there selfs to blame.

Personally I quite like the urban exploration sites, the section on Cane hill hospital (local to me) with the mortuary photos was "interesting"

There's a bunker near Edinburgh that I "visited" when in the area :taped:

I find it fascinating, maybe I'm stranger than I thought

Thats the thing though from what i read recently in top gear magazine Both GM and Ford are really struggling in america. Their workforce is costing them a fortune in pensions etc and their cars just aren't sellin. A price war between them is meaning some models are being sold at a loss.
