supra650
Started my TT supra up the other day and it started clattering switched off straight away as i immediatly thought it sounded like something in the compression chamber, got it home on me mates trailer and took out the plugs i put a nylon cable tie down the hole with some grease on it and wittled it about a bit on pulling it out it had bits of metal on it so it dont look very good does it i done a compression test (cold) and all five cylinders gave about 150 psi wheras cylinder 6 only gave about 90 i have just started stripping it down is it worth repairing do you think or should i look at a recon engine i would have thought that it must have scored the bore badly for the pieces of ring to have come out shall i strip head off anyway to look. i would have thought a rebore etc would be a fortune :thumbdown so a recon might be cheaper advice please cheers Steve
geoffvalenti
Hi Steve I've never heard of piston rings breaking by just starting the engine. Maybe if you revved the nuts off it, it's possible, They fail more usually when the engine is being stressed. Did you get the metal pieces out of all the cylinders, or just No. 6? I'd definitely advise stripping the head off, to see the damage. It costs nothing, only time, and at least you'll know for sure what the damage is. If you're talking about buying a recon engine from Toyota, then I wouldn't think it was going to be cheap anyway. I'm pretty sure that the usual Exchange & Mart type engine "rebuilders" don't do engines for the Supra, which, as far as I'm concerned, can only be a good thing Maybe Phoenix in Watford can help you, they seem to have been getting some good reports recently. You may be able to pick up a good secondhand engine to swap over, but it's always a gamble, unless you personally know where the engine has come from. Good luck with it

supra650
Hi geoff ill strip it and see anyway the car just made the noise immediately on start up i never rev the engine cold and not much when its warm to be honest. i had driven the car fine and hadnt driven it hard either, no prior warning unless the metals from somewhere else loose foreign object. metal from no6 piston only, on google there is a few companys offering a recon engine with warrantys waiting to hear back from them will strip and check before going further. Thanx for reply cheers Geoff
b_have
Have you any pics of the bits you retrieved? Are they ferous (magnetic)? If it happened on startup, won't be rings, more likely the engines eaten something. Have you had the intercooler pipes off recently?
JohnK
I think Terry S can get crated engines (new) cheap. MVP are also worth a look.

Chris Wilson
Are the "bits" you pulled out ferrous? (IE, does a magnet attract them?) If not it's almost ceratinly a broken piston. If they are magnetic it could be valve or a TOTAL piston failure allowing ring parts to escape, but it would have zero compression on that pot. I would suspect a dropped valve or massive detonation if the damage is so severe you are pulling bits out of the plug hole
supra650
Hi Chris just checked no they r not ferrous they looked it but have just got a magnet and it isnt attracting them, sounds pretty fudged doesnt it there was no warning though, car drove fine for seven miles prior to this went to local bodyshop and worked on my sons car from nine in morning till four am the next morning came out started it up and it was there straight away on tickover no reving nothin, never a good time for ur car to go wrong but after such a long day it couldnt have felt worse, my poor car certainly a lot of bits to take off to even get to the head isnt there.
