Anyone help me out

My cars rear suspension has been knocking for the past month and while i was driving lastnight going sensibly round a bend it started to feel different! It judders and jerks about while going round a corner, or change gear. Anyone know what this is? Is it my suspension finally going and i need to buy new dampers? Or is it worse??

Theres a banging noise aswell as the judders and shakes when going round corners which sounds like the wheels gonna fall off. Iv'e checked the bolts and there fine! When you get out of the car and shake the back end you can hear it creaking and continues to do so for a few seconds when you stop shaking.

This is starting to worry me as the cars undrivable!!!

HELP PLEASE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Yeah you could do that no problem.

When you said you "checked the bolts and there(sic) fine" were you talking about the damper bolts? With the rear wheels off you should be able to tell if the damper has got a fucked bush(Ooo err Mrs) or not. Sounds like the probable cause to me at least.

If you can't tell by doing this what I'd do is take the damper off completely and drive round the block to see if the noise has gone. Don't drive far (or fast) without dampers fitted though, obviously. Anyway once you have got the damper off it should be pretty obvious if one of the bushes has gone.

Otherwise it might be a problem with one of the other bushes on the suspension.

(edit to change spelling mistake "witted" to "fitted"):stupid:

Hmm, driving with no rear spring will be an interesting experience for the man :sly:

spoke to my dad about this and he reckons that when the shockers are gone, cars judder nround corners etc.

I'll put new shockers in and see what happens.

Can't believe nobodys had the same problem as me, theres loads of people on this board.

Cheers

It looks really bad, it's totally came away!!!

The rubber bellows that I believe you are taloking about are just dust and road dirt protectors and have zero influence on the efficiency of the dampers. They can be split, ragged or missing altogether and have no effect on the efficacy of the dampers performance. Still think it's NOT a damper problem, I have a car that comes to me with well over 200,000 miles on it, on original dampers and that doesn't do what you describe your car as doing...

With all the various "Supe noises" we all report from time to time we should get and record them and post them for comparison !

Check ball joints on the top and bottom suspension arms. A pal's Supe exhibited a similar if less worrying "cracking/creaking" before replacement. Joints seemed completely solid, no amount of levering the joints with the wheel off would show any movement. In desperation he changed the joints anyway (both sides for consistency) and the noise went away!

Best o' luck!

I have just had the new rear shocks fitted so wouldn't that be checking the bolts? Everything looked fine under the car.

What noise would it make if the bushes were gone? The car sqeeks when you get out the car and shake the back end.

There are a fair few other bolts to check, such as subframe bolts etc. I would say that with symptoms as dramatic as you describe, the odds are that something mechanical has worked loose rather than an item wearing out gradually.
