si wants supra
Hi everyone, just noticed yesterday on my boost gauge, when it sat idling and the gauge is showing a vacuum, when I turn my steering wheel the gauge jumps upto 10 hg from 20, and when you straighten it back up it goes back down to 20. Now I am guessing (i did not fit gauge) that when the previous owner had it installed he connected the power into the loom of the power steering, would this be corect, and if so where is best to connect for power to the gauge. cheers for your answers. Si.
tbourner
It reads inlet manifold pressure, the power steering pump has a valve which allows some air through bypassing the throttle body when you turn the wheel (so it won't stall with the extra draw needed to run the power steering pump - basically revs the engine a bit). Shouldn't be that much though I wouldn't think.
mikeyb10supra
I spliced into my ashtray light for power......you can then control the light intensity on the dimmer switch. oooops just re-read, mine is a mechanical gauge so ignore the above
si wants supra
Cheers guys still a bit confused though, I understand that obviously the pump needs power when being turned, could the by pass be letting through to much air, or am i being stupid, the pump does sound quite loud @ the mo though it is not over reving the engine, idles @ 850 turn wheel goes upto just under 900 any more thoughts are appreciated. cheers guys
tbourner
Not sure, could be what you said something electrical (don't know much about electrical gauges), or could be a faulty gauge (over-reading the power steering adjustment), or could be power steering pump going and for some reason allowing too much air through (can't see it being that TBH), or I'm being an idiot (most likely) and it's actually a normal amount of change for turning the wheel (never really pay that much attention to the gauge when steering!!). Si, when you are stood still, it takes the pump a LOT of effort to turn the fairly big (even as standard) wheels around. when moving its a different story.
