RobSheffield
i have a DoLuck/Samurai nose, and wondered if i could fit a really small plate in the centre...not a stick on one! whats the smallest i can get away with - is it a case of 'as long as the letters are sized properly, i can cut off the yellow surrounding it to an extent?' are motorcycle sized plates a good idea? Faye Brother
whats the smallest i can get away with - is it a case of 'as long as the letters are sized properly, i can cut off the yellow surrounding it to an extent?' Correct. You'll need to keep a minimum 11mm border (from memory) from the characters to the edge of the plate, but assuming everything else is spaced legally, etc, cut down plates are perfectly legal. [edited to correct the border size to 11mm rather than 10mm - DVLA requirements here

Alex
Using too small a plate is a worse offense than NOT having a plate...just as a heads up.
Faye Brother
But providing the font, spacing, borders, character size etc, conform to the legal requirements it's not an offence as there's no stipulation on the physical size of the plate itself. tbourner
Can we get a list of defined legal sizes for a plate on a j-spec? Aren't Jap imports allowed smaller letters if it's a car that wasn't designed for use in the European market (not sure what that means as we have UK specs?). If we can work out and say we can buy a front plate that is XXmm by XXmm, and the letters have to be xx high by xx wide, and the same for rear plate etc. Make sure it's legal and put it up on here. I'm sure everyone on here would appreciate a smaller plate on the front!
Darren
I got a smaller number plate mounted in the Jap sized standard mount. Plod never show any interest.....
supragold
Haven't had a plate on the front of mine for nearly 2 years. Touch wood - I've never been pulled. If you have it in your front screen (which I do sometimes if in a big town where the old bill are) then they don't care. They are usually out catching real criminals. Still think you would get enough air in mate because the air would be forced inwards and upwords, it's just our brain that thinks like, oh X size blocking off X hole if you know what I mean .......
