how_supra
Not really all that important, but I'm just wondering...... I'm 24 years old, and I want[ed] to hire a car, but why should it cost me in some cases £100+ more to hire the same car, as it would if I was 25 years old?? Is there really any difference between me now and when I turn 25 in 8 months time???? To take an example, my mate passed her driving test last summer, just before her 24th birthday. She has just turned 25 and is flipping scary to be in the car with in terms of car control etc. But stupid rules dictate that because she is over 25 [and held her driving licence for over a year] she is a safer driver than me who is 24 years old and has been driving since I was 18??? Really to me that is simply ludicrous............ Can someone pleeeeaaasssssssseeeee explain why it is like that?

how_supra
Is that really it? But what about those statistics that show new drivers are most likely to have an accident aswell? Ie my mate? I think it should be done in number of years licence held or something? I don't know, I'm just having a general moan.
Bobbeh
Same with anything car related, its just the cost of insuring someone of a younger age, but with hire car companies they probably cant afford the costs required to cover younger drivers. I remember when I was needing a hire car to go onsite for work once, I was 21 and I was lucky i got one at all, I ended up with a 1.4 Clio! how_supra
Well its poo!! and I want my 25th birthday card to say "and now you can hire a van" I just want[ed] a basic car to get me about whilst my proper car is being repaired [still - 1 month later]. So far I have had the pleasure of a 1.1 kia picanto and a Clio, but have had to pay stupid amounts in extra insurance etc. Oh well
Bobbeh
I know what you mean Same with car insurance, 25 used to be a stage where the rates would fall, this seems to have moved to 30!
how_supra
So my insurance renewal on my FTO is in May next year - I turn 25 in June. Will they just see my age as being 24 and still hike my insurance up even though I will be 25 three weeks later? **edit** assuming 25 is the cheaper age break Probably. Oh vell...........off to kitchen to pour me a glass of wine.
Bolsius
This toss has been going on for ever mate, when I was starting out it was "your insurance will get a lot lower when your 21" when I was 21 it was 25, 25 it was 30. I am 38 with 10 yrs no claims on a bike and a car, and havent noticed a drop in either of my insurances. Galling thing is I have 3 cars (dont ask) and a bike, tax and insure all of them, while it is a physical impossibility for me to ride/ drive all of them at the same time can I get some sort of combined policy? can I boll0x! ScuttleRX
Might be worth giving this place a try, they do an enthusiast policy which is one policy to cover a range of cars (possibly a bike too). Worth a shot, ive heard their prices arent bad either.
