engine oil overfilling --- is the level alive?

This was the second time I overfilled the supra by accident.

 

I'm very particular with these things, using proper washers, torques etc

 

There is something weird about this engine. I lift the car from the driver's side, undo the drain plug, get rid of the crap, then bring it down level and fill it until just a few mm below max on the stick (incrementally). Oil filter left undisturbed (can't reach the booga for love or money)

Checking the level 10mins later, it's still the same (no latent drainage)

 

Now the engine was cold before, cold after, so I'd expect the level to be where I left it.

 

Go for a drive, give it some stick, come back, check the oil level (cold engine again) ----> 0.5litre too much.

 

WTF? :swear:

Well it must be retaining the oil somewhere obviously, that volume doesn't make it to the sump first time round.

 

I was wondering if anyone knows *where* exactly

 

The way I drive it, after 1500miles the oil is tired (fully synth)

Short trips, full boost blasts. Worst conditions for the oil.

I understand that a thread with such a title (and subject) is liable to attracting an element of mockery and sarcasm.

 

It's nice not to take things too seriously every now and then, it's only the internet...

 

If anyone else had also 'discovered' this pattern of supra oil-filling they could simply say 'here...here'

Next time I'll fill 0.5lt less, duh

Oil aeration? Might explain the level rising after a run. 0.5 litres on the stick seems excessive, though.

 

Does it go back down to where you filled it it you leave it, say, overnight?

 

I don't know what you are filling with but FWIW if an oil manufacturer couldn't make an oil that would be good well after 1500 miles of anyone driving then they ought to be taken out and shot.

 

Some of the oil change intervals touted about on here are bonkers IMHO :(

maybe it was 400cc, but we're talking this sort of ballpark.

Looks like some oil sits somewhere after being poured and needs the engine to run so that it flows back to the sump afterwards. This is usually the case, but not to this extent.

Anyway, it's no big deal...

yes, they should.

But for the minimal amount of trouble it takes, I prefer to change the oil more often than not.

I sleep better knowing that contaminants and all sorts of suspended crap are gone. Bit overprotective, yes.

I didn't tout anything. I don't think there's a major advantage in changing the oil in less than 3K miles, not if a good synthetic is used.

If I were to travel up to Scotland and back I wouldn't worry about the oil having done 1000 extra miles, because they'd be mild (mostly) motorway miles.

But I usually take the supra out for short bursts and give it hell --- well that's my excuse anyway :music:

can i have your used oil and filter everytime you change ill never have to buy oil or a filter again :D

 

and ill still be able to change it every 1500 Miles

I can also collect my spent exh gases if you want to reuse them, sort of DIY-EGR

hey, sorry to ressurect an old thread, but this may have been what has happened to me, just checked it after an oil change and the level is above max.

 

my question is, do you think it's ok do drive it like this or must it be drained? if so is there an easier way to drain it than the sump plug?

 

how much difference is there between min and max anyway on the dipstick, 1l or less?

It's meant to be 1lt between min and max, but don't assume that it follows the same pattern over max (the shape of the sump changes)

(I have successfully sucked oil out from the dispstick hole by the way. It's messy and slow though, better to bite the bullet and undo the plug)

ok cheers John,

 

I've done a bit of a search on here and read that CW reports that he often overfills for track use to avoid oil surge, so I guess it doesn't blow the oil seals out straight away. hmmm I might use it carefully tonight and get the garage to drain a little tomorrow just to be safe...

 

what a PITA though, I'll ensure it is filled only half way next time and top up carefully after using it for a journey

Machine Mart sell those hydraulic pump thingys for g/boxes and the like...
