Transfer box woes

Just on the off chance someone here has worked on one before. Car is a 53 Volvo XC70 AWD D5 Auto

I noticed a rattle from my car which sound like a heat shield rattle. Got it over a pit and soon discovered that the rattle was coming from gearbox/engine area. So it went into garage yesterday and they have said that my transfer box has gone, more specifically the bearings.

They are still to confirm 100% once they get the info from the specialist they farm it out to, but they originally thought that the bearings could be replaced on their own but now it could be the case that they can't and it is gotta be a complete new/2nd hand transfer box to fix.

Has anyone ever dealt/fixed/been in same boat with a transfer box from a Volvo? Is it a complete box or can only the bearings be fixed?

I am looking really for the cheapest fix possible as the car will be getting traded in. It is unfortunate that I cannot trade it in now (only started a new job in January and cannot risk committing myself to a new car) as the car still drives and has no noise unless it is parked up or stationary whilst in reverse.
