DamanC
Apparently according to toyota my rocker cover is weeping a little oil. "yes that will need replacing sir......that will be £250" sod that for a game of soldiers, ill have ago myself. Doing my research its case of unscrewing the rocker cover bolts, unscrewthe coil pack, remove gasket, replace and then put it all back together. My main question is, do i need any black gunky stuff in order to get a good seel? when they replaced the gasket on my saxo they used lots of black gunky stuff and is it really that simple as ive described? pointers appreciated
Jake
We're talking about the cam covers, right? On a J-Spec TT? Yeah it's very straightforward. Just undo the bolts, break the seal and lift it off. There's only two bolts on each cam cover in the coilpack area, you might even be able to do it without removing the coilpacks - can't remember. Don't use black gasket sealant, you shouldn't need it anyway.
Jake
Oh yeah, each cam cover also has a couple of 10mm nuts as well as all those 10mm bolts. You'll have to wind off the rubber washers that were under those nuts before you can lift the cam cover.
DamanC
Yeah sorry J spec TT (i should create a sig of some sort) "-check oil leak from rear of cylinder head - Slight oil leak from cam cover oil seals/gasket - Replace rocker cover gaskets" with both the following parts priced at £7.53 "gasket, rocker and gskit, rocker cover" thats their exact words
Jake
So what's the £250 for? What's their labour rate?
DamanC
I suppose so
colsoop
A pair of rocker cover gaskets is Around £15.00 so they wabt £235.00 for labour. I reckon they are billing you for a 4 hour job at a labour rate £58.75 an hour. Get stuck in yourself, it isn't a hard job just a bit awkward. TLicense
The gaskets are about £15 The bolts are just under £2 each. You need 12. You also need 4 nuts which area about £2 each. You then need 16 washers to go under each bolt/nut they're about £2 each. There's also some sealant required to go around where the cam's protrude through. I don't have a cost on this but it won't be very much. So what's that come to? about £80? I would also, if you haven't done so already, take the opportunity to change the two hoses that link the cams. I seem to remember them being about £16, although I can't remember for sure. I've got the receipts for all at home. I've also replaced all the plugs for the coil packs as they were only a couple of quid each (you need 6) and am in the process of trying to find the part numbers for the little grey clips that hold the loom in place (I can't find them in the EPC, and Toyota keep ordering the coil pack plugs. I'm going to take one up to them on Saturday for them to use to help find what the part no's are) If you want to make sure the job is done right that's all the parts you'll need. The bastard bit of the job is getting to the last few bolts which are directly under the hose for the IACV. So you need to undo the 5 (IIRC) hoses that connect to that and then remove it. I recon I could do it in an hour, and do a bloody good job of it at that too. Marco, I'm hoping to do this myself this coming Saturday. If you like we can have a rocker cover gasket replacement day. I've got all the tools we'll need. What's your place like for space to work? If it's not too good there's space at my dads. Let me know...
Marco
Hi Tony, Sounds like a plan to me. Can you order all the bits for me aswell then, including the 2 breather hoses? I'll probably have to replace plugs as wel, I've got NGK's. Can you get hold of those? Let me know. I haven't got any proper space to work on the car, just a street CJ, I'll check out your carputer later then when it's gonna be installed
TLicense
I'll give Toyota a call either a bit later on today or tomorrow get a complete price for everything and then give you a shout to make sure it's all good with you. Do you know which NGK's you use? We should be able to use the driveway at my parents place. I'll send you some directions. Cheers, Tony
colsoop
I have prices for most of that except the 4 nuts. 909105-06166 bolt £0.36 each x12 909210-07001 washer £1.36 each x12 11214-46011 rocker cover gasket (exhaust)£4.88 11213-46020 rocker cover gasket (intake) £5.20 The above prices are undiscounted and exclude VAT. I found that the bolts were fine when i removed them so i didn't replace them. I still bought 6 though just incase. I expect if you give Cj's guy a ring he will be able to save quite a bit on those prices.
