No 4th gear or kick down on Autobox...

Okay, thinking I had a boost problem is incorrect, took the car to Whifbitz today, and Paul test drove the car to confirm my lack of power is due to the gearbox not Kicking down....

I then took the car to a transmission specialist in Chelmsford also, one of the technicians inspected the box on a ramp only to tell me that the auto has an electronic kick down, and not a cable controlled jobbie...

After he test drove the car he confirmed the car was not kicking down, and also the Overdrive is not working.... so I have 3 gears. Joy.

So very confused, I have only had the car back a few days and ive got a migrane. It's just one problem leading to another and this time i'm so lost. I can quite easily buy a new TT auto box and ECU... but will that resolve the problem?

Before all of this polava, the car ran fine imo. The turbos were a little worse for wear but non the less it kicked down and shifted well...

Now, the only work that has been carried out on the car since this has occured is:

Timing belt, Crank Pulley, Front Crank seals, Cam bearing tensioner, tensioner, belt all changed.

HKS FCD fitted, Walbro 255 Fuel Pump fitted, Cam Gaskets replaced, Subframe sealed, Exhaust reseated correctly with the correct mounts, FMIC fitted, HKS air induction fitted, Rad hoses replaced, Turbo hoses replaced... Non of the above has even touched the autobox, so i'm lost, the fluid level is fine (transmission fluid that is). So lost.

Anyone had any similar experiences?

Thanks

Dan

I have had the exact same issue on Pajeros and Hilux's, the KPH/MPH speed convertor is usually the culprit. But, there is also a speed sensor in an autobox which can be prone to failure. Is the speedo working as it should?

Removed the speedo converter and gave it a run, but still no joy, turbos are still wistling like mad waiting for it to kick down, but it doesnt play ball :(. The speedo ran fine before, :/.

Hmm, has it had any nasty smells about it recently, like a burning smell? Just thinking the gear oil might have needed changing and burnt a paper clutch out....I'm clutching at straws a bit now though...(pun not intended)

hmmm it does smell rather toasty on occasions, however I havent really driven it hard enough imo to put too much strain on the clutch.... doesnt explain its unwillingness to down gear on kick down :(. Awkward gearbox... haha

Its been a few years since I had my Supra so hopefully I've got this right... So in manual...

L, 2 and 3 change fine. You then click the overdrive button and it doesn't change into overdrive (4th)?

As for the kick down, you're expecting it to drop down into 2nd...

- its not in manual mode is it?

- is there not usually a button behind the accelerator pedal that does the kick down? Have you checked that that is not being impeded by the carpet?

If you remove the inside sill trim aka driver side kick panel, you can pull up the corner of the carpet and you will see the switch connector and cable. Check that for continuity with a multimeter. Worth a shot but i doubt this will be linked to no o/d Does the light come on dash?

Heya dude, yes that's correct, unfortunately I'm still waiting on my new auto speedo but once I've got it I can check for sure, as for kickdown ill check but what's really odd is that the car will boost really well but then skip 2nd and go straight into 3rd, so all boost is lost.. and then motorway cruising at 70 then sticking your foot down equals no kick down what so ever, I suppose its ecu related, just so confusing.

What does the fluid smell like ????

Theres sometimes a burning smell, Paul noticed it when I arrived to his the other day about the pulley.. but I assumed it was that making the smell... the trans fluid was a light red colour when I checked it earlier.. think that's normal? :s

Isn't the overdrive inhibited by coolant temp signal ? Failing that check solenoids and connections on gearbox

Hmmm that's interesting, ill have a look, coolant should be fine though dude, had changed only a few days ago, it feels electrical, like a connection or ecu problem, Chris Wilson is going to do the diagnostics on her next week for me so fingers crossed hell sort it :)

Was the fluid level OK (checked with the engine running and the box in P) There may be another speedo convertor lurking in the wiring somewhere.

Have you pulled the gearbox error codes?

Haven't checked the trans fluid in P.. ill do that later definitely. Mrs Wilson will hopefully be able to diagnose the problem, think it is either a solenoid or connection to the ecu, if weather allows ill have a brief scan about :)

Okay, just had a look around the ecu, and have spotted a loose wire from the ecu to the speed delimiter... not sure if this is the problem but it looms clear that they had been soldered previously, don't want to touch anything yet and make things worse.. ill take a pic and see what you guys think.. also I've just picked up my auto dials today so ill connect them shortly also :D wahey!
