Important Number you should note as of 25/Jul/05 09:24if you travel to work on the tube please note the following information:

If your mobile phone has no signal (so even if you were in a tunnel) if you dial 112 it diverts to a satellite signal and puts you through to the 999 call centre.

ALL phone companies have signed up and as it is a satellite service it also gives them a trace to you if you don't know where you are.

Well, can you get satellite signals undergroud?

Also, isn't 112 the European (or Austrailian?) equivilent of our 999 and the american 911 anyway? And as such 112 would probably already connect you to our 999 emergency services ()I'm not going to test this theory though)

To me it smells like a hoax to get lots of folks ringing 112 and swamping the 999 emergency number.

112 is a legit service that has been around for a while - it's the European emergency call number that works in any EU country to replace the local emergency number

Nothing to do with getting a signal when no signal is available though - plain and simple if you are on the underground and your phone has no reception you can't make a call, it's not magic :)

Jake is right, although the message is possibly still correct-ish; if you can use your mobile in the tube (and it will show reception if you can) it's because they have put cell phone (i.e. 'mobile' phone) transmitters down there, it's nothing to do with satellites I can assure you.

And yes, 112 is the number for emergency services from a mobile, 999 didn't used to work when they were first brought out (but does now - but 999 and 112 are the same).

The gf got the latest yesterday, "I am a 6 year old, with no nose or ears, I am dead, if you don't send this to at least 10 people I will visit you at your bedside tonight and stab you to death!" I mean seriously what is that crap about!!

They have been trying to develop a system for a good few years now that would let people use their mobiles on the underground, so it wouldn't surprise me.

In Stockholm you have been able to use mobiles on the tube for years, just a matter of having transmitters down there. I dont see what the problem is.

Satellite Services are not available on normal GSM phones..they are a completely different frequency and will not work on the tube system..however!!!!

There is a new service I noticed that links a local Mobile network to the satalitte services its now available on ferries and Cruise ships called 'IM-Sim' I think.

How it works I guess is the ship has its own GSM base station and its conncted to the ships Immersat sytem (or whatever)...but you have to register when you get on board and the call costs are way more expensive than a normal Satellite phone...

The best way to find out if there is such a system operating on the tube is to select 'Select Network' Function on your phone whilst on the tube...but if you do this and someone sees you they may think you are deternating a bomb and it will prob end up with you getting shot in the head...so dont bother.

But only if you run away from the armed police who are shouting at you to "stop or we'll shoot" and leap over a turnstile in a futile attempt to get away!!

"Stop or We'll Shoot" Were you there then? :stickpoke

Back on topic slightly: I suppose if they DID have mobile phone coverage on the Tube..it would allow people to use bombs like the one in Madrid which was activated by mobile phone.

Also its quite nice in a way to not be sitting next to 50 other passengers all yapping away at the top of their voice like on the train....but then we get bored coz we cant complain about anything.

I got smacked in the face once in 1988 for using a mobile phone on a train lol (I prob deserved it)

People used to moan about people using walkmans on the underground...they dont seem to bother now...maybe the headphones on the I-paq I-pod whatever its called is better insulated or maybe..the world has grown up a bit and we have learned to tolerate each other in this day and age !!!!!
