Pete
They're pretty strict. It's a doddle anyway - nothing to worry about. I was head jurour in our case and I got to stand up and say "The b*tch is guilty, lock her up!"
J4CK50N
You have to have an extremely good reason to get out of this, and although your sister getting married is very important to your mum it is not the courts!! She'll just have to grin and bear it! Sorry mate

Matt Harwood
My mum has had to do jury service twice now. The first one she could defer because of work. The company she worked for was very small, there were other people away on holiday at that time and they had a big order to get out. She had to send a letter off to the court from her company explaining the situation. She still had to do it a few months later though. terribleturner
They must be able to take the wedding into consideration. Or in the middle of the trial get your mum to stand up and shout "I know him the bastard". I think she'll get let out
SkyJawa
You can defer once, but you will still have to do it again in the future........... It is a legal obligation of being a resident in this country, failure to attend is a prison sentence...........
cashpoint
Had to do jury service when i turned 18 (youngest on the jury had to do it month after my 18th) defered the first till later in the year due to exams. One of the men on the jury had said he need to get out of it once the case had started so he said he may know one of the defence witness. Don't know if he did or not but he was allowed out of jury service, as he had started it though he didn't need to do it again.

There was nothing for 7 days (stayed at work), then I was in for 3 and off the others. Some courts just ask you to come in and sit you there until you're wanted - all depends on what cases are going through at the moment. You finish early too
geoffvalenti
Get a criminal record. Worked for me! Must have been for something pretty bad Jake All registered electors between the ages of 18 and 70 who have lived in the UK for a continuous period of at least five years since the age of 13 are eligible for jury service, unless they are ineligible or excused. It is an offence when summoned not to attend unless ineligible, deferred or excused. Those ineligible for service are those who: Have been sentenced in the UK to imprisonment of 5 years' or more Have been sentenced, in the previous 10 years, to 3 months or more imprisonment, detention or youth custody, have received a suspended sentence or have been subject to a community order Suffer or have suffered from mental illness or a psychotic disorder. For jury service to be deferred, the potential juror must contact the court and give reasons why they feel they cannot attend as required. Whilst there is no definition of 'good reason', valid reasons may include: A previously-booked holiday Scheduled medical treatment Disability Religious holiday Where a person's business would suffer. The final decision rests with the trial judge. An employer cannot require an employee to attempt to be excused. Individuals are only completely excused from jury service in exceptional circumstances, which may include: Insufficient understanding of English Certain care responsibilities Being a member of a religious order or society whose beliefs are incompatible with membership of a jury. Guest Sakura
No chance, to get out of jury service you need to be some sort of vital worker, like a surgeon. Doctors are no longer exempt - the rules changed during the last year or so. Hardly anyone is exempt any more, no matter how vital your job. :thumbdown

Class One
Yep, it does. However, Juries are picked when at cour for thier suitability. If I was picked, i doubt very much if i was considered to be suitable in most cases. Its quite easy to get out of Jury service...esp if you have extremist views on certain elements of todays society! (Not that i have! )
