TLicense
We actually figured that they were creating vortices. Probably altering flow onto the rear wing... WE have VG's (Vorted generators) in a number of area's on the cars. That's what the wings down the engine covers of the cars, and indeed McLarens "viking wings" do. The create vortices that reduces pressure under the rear wing elements. The elements have zero downforce generating benefit themselves. Most would snap off if they started generating any downforce themselves.
JohnA
Tony, quick question on aeros: suppose that a wing creates 66lb downforce at 90mph (random figures!) Would it be fair to say that it creates 4*66lb downforce at 2*90mph?
TLicense
Basically yes. Aerodynamic force squares with speed.
Miguel
Yup I got it now I was thinking of downforce silly me .....brain failure there for a mo ...think I will just keep quiet
JohnA
Basically yes. Aerodynamic force squares with speed. That's what I thought. But if you tell someone that the 'ghey' stock wing creates over 250lb downforce at top speed, they won't really believe you, will they? If they did, then how come people ditch the wings for top speed runs at TOTB? Isn't that a lot of stability to trade for the sake of for a few mph? It's the downforce equivalent of having a few sacks of cement in the boot.
Guest Terry S
Interesting stuff Did the CRD car run a rear wing when the did 201mph last year
Alex
Interesting stuff Did the CRD car run a rear wing when the did 201mph last year No they didn't....let me guess where you're going with that info? Thinking about it, did they have a small flip up on the rear hatch?
Guest Terry S
the latest CRD pictures shows what appears to be a very small lip. I have removed my rear spoiler but now I am wondering if I should: 1/. leave it spoilerless 2/. Put the RMM back on 3/. Put a stock TT one on. This is all with the TOTB top speed run in mind, not daily use.
Ian C
Tell you what, why don't you run with your wing and I'll run with mine then we can remove them and see what the difference is -Ian
JohnA
Mine wasn't a totally idle question by the way, I'd hate to see someone lose control of a supra at such speeds. That video of the RX7 flipping over at 200mph at the salt lake really shook me up. Maybe it's worth investigating further before messing about with aeros, that's all... Guest Terry S
yeah plan Bat Man. Not sure how many TS I will try though
TLicense
200lb's?? That's a lot more than I thought it would be. I wouldn't have thought it would have structurally supported that much. Remember that drag also squares with speed, so if it has a 3:1 efficiency ratio, ie for every 3lbs of lift it produces 1lb of drag, (Which is what we used to aim to be below at most medium downforce circuits) you can get rid of 67lbs of drag by removing it. Let alone the fact that the effective "weight" of the car would have reduced by 200lbs. If I was going for a high speed, no corners run, ie top speed, I would lose it. AndrewIV
I see yall (yeah I am from southern US) touched on flat bottoming a supra for aerodynamics but in the picture only the front facia was done. I havent had a chance to read all of the messages so you may have already said but anyway, shouldnt the whole car be flat bottomed (say like an enzo) to make the most of the downforce?
