The air bag is under the pad so covering it would not cause any problems The pads are designed to split when the bag goes off, any additional covering could inhibit this. Not to mention I wouldn't paticuarly want fractured bits of carbon fiber embedded in my face as well as the fricton burns you tend to get from a deployed air bag.
