Sharpie
I'll be in the US when the iPhone4 comes on Thursday and thought I might be able to save a few ££ by buying the unit their and then use it with my Orange account when I get back. Does anyone know if the US works like EU in that you just have to get the provider to unlock it for you ? (Assuming that AT&T / Apple store will offer this service as they only have it on the one carrier (AT&T) in US at the moment) Thanks
martini
EDIT: As Caseys says, SIM-free iPhone's can't be bought in the USA and you wouldn't be able to get a contract there when not a resident.
caseys
You really won't save any money... $299 phone + $60ish/month 2 year contract = $1739 Can't buy an unlocked / contract free phone in the US. They're all tied to AT&T. Yes you can jailbreak them but the cost as above is far more than just having to fork out for a sim-free over here and have 1-2 years of a £15/month sim-only contract
Sharpie
Cheers Caseys I found this from Apple's store FAQ's: Can I buy an iPhone without an AT&T contract? No. iPhone requires a two-year AT&T wireless service contract. Oh well.
