Uprated Torque Converter (stupid question)

Recommended Posts

What will this actually do for me in terms of driving?

Will it just enable me to do power brake starts from say 3800 rpm instead of the stock 2200?

ie Is it just delaying the first gear enagement?

Does it improve/worsen any other aspect of driving the car? When I am not doing a power brake start does it drive normally?

Interested to hear from people that have them fitted. Any other useful comments on TC's would be good.

Sorry for the dumb questions but if you don't ask ........

It will mean the revs shoot upto 3800 ish when ever you put your foot down and then the autobox catches up.

It can be annoying for daily driving...this is why I wouldn't advise anything more than a 3200 for a daily driver that likes to do the odd drag race.

I think I read somewhere that some of these converters are switchable, ie will drive normally until you flick the switch and then they'll engage at 3200 or 3800 or whatever youv'e got it set at. Can this be right? or is it a load of balls.

So for normal driving with a TC fitted you would just be a bit lighter on the throttle than usual when moving off from a stand still?

Perhaps I'll stick to NOS as my big power device. At least I can turn that off in the wet!

dont waste your time on a 3200 stall. when i was looking round was advised to go with 3200 but decided to go with a 3600-3800. now got a 4000 stall on stock twins drives fine to me. eyefi has had a drive of mine with new 4000 stall. it sort of feels like a clutch slipping. you can easily light up tyres too. can be a bit hard to get power down on street tyres. i just decided to take a chance on it and not listen to all the talk of it will be no good on street.

on a hill at traffic lights you can leave it in drive and take foot off gas and car holds or creeps forward. on higher stall you will find car rolls back abit. you need to give it a bit more revs to get car going forward.

with the 4000 stall and sticky tyres i could get up to 3500 revs less on street tyres due to not as much grip. stock stall was best on 2000 revs to me.

i have a spare 3600-3800 that needs sending back to get re flashed to 4000 and to use for a spare. (went faulty due to gearbox pump failure)

they also supposed to be worse on mpg (thats why some fit a tc lockup switch)

think you talking about £700 + £150-£200 for fitting + your g/b oil too

Don't forget you could need a whole new transmission when it fails due to too much hot stressy torque though Geordie!

How is your transmission holding up Mark has it been OK?

So if I get a 3800 I'll launch much better at Pod but will I still be able to cane the inevitable M3 that pulls up next to me on the street without losing the back end every time?

Cheers

Just
