ADSL question

Recommended Posts

I have a problem with my ADSL line whereby I keep getting a dropped signal. This can happen quite regularly and is getting annoying.

It normally only happens for a few minutes and then reconnects and I was wondering if you people think this is a line problem or a possible hardware / router problem?

I used to have this problem when I forgot to add a splitter, and connected the phone and modem with the same connectors. Each time I got a phonecall the adsl was disconnected.

But this wasn't a wireless connection...

Peter -

I have checked the splitter and that is connected corectly.

I'd check your router and adapter first i had the same problem turned out router was faulty.

I am erring towards the router too. I have recently changed the network adaptor for a new one so that "should" rule that out.

Is it the connection which is dropping or is the phone line dying? we had a loose connection on the BT socket (whatever the equivalent is over there) and it was causing intermittent problems

It is the actual connection (as in the ADSL sign flashing on the router). The phone line is always OK and with no noise on the line.

I am now pretty convinced that it is the router as I had problems once again this morning but after changing over to a spare router the d/l speed has increased and the dropping of the signal diminished but not completely stopped.

As my routers are quite old, could this be a contributing factor to the problem with the performance? Both are Netgear - one a DG834 and the other a DG834G.

If you think these should be upgraded, do you have any suggestions which to go for? I don't necessarily need wireless as my PC is fixed in position and I don't use any other devices.

Yet another update!

As the router was quite old, I decided to update to the latest firmware and since then I have had no cut off of signal.

I am not sure if that is more through coincidence than action, but so far so good!
