Just to update I've decided laser/light beam stuff is the only way to do it properly, and a mate reckons he can help with that (he's a laser expert). My housemate (programmer born & bred almost!) is quite interested in helping me out and I am sure when I get round to asking my uncle about the whole hardware & software linking together stuff he'll be able to help, too.
