How often should brake fluid be changed?

This is in a road car - Pug 207. I have a friend who has one just coming up on two years old. The Peugot dealer has told her that the brake fluid has to be changed every two years (it is going in for a service next week). That can't be correct can it?

That's generally a good time to swap it.

 

Still, tell her not to bother, I mean, what's the worst that can happen?

On my run arounds I just usually bleed the brakes ones a year, which results in a little top up so eventually it will all get renewed.

I have changed it in the Supra three times since I got it, 9 years. Only changesd it about the same in my SRi which I had for 15 years. Two years seems a bit excessive to me

In an ideal world 2 years is probably about right, but they are after your money. I would be happy with 4 years in a low power run around not likely to be thrashed. If it's under warranty you may find its continuation demands strictly adhering to the service schedule

 

Here's a quickie if you don't mind? One our Russian Black Terrier bitches has been nipped by one of the Anatolian bitches. She's now got one of the pads of her front foot split to the bone along its full length. I don't think stitching is viable on pad cuts, is it? I have brought her into the house, the snow here has self washed it, and it's not bleeding. Doesn't look or smell infected, it's very clean in fact. Happened yesterday, she won't walk on it, but isn't fiddling with it. Shall I wash it in salty water twice a day and see if it starts to heal? I know you guys love to cut things off, and although she won't be shown I'd like her to keep the toe if possible! Thanks Alan

Also always heard that 2 years is about right.. Also what can a brake fluid change cost?.. Next to nothing. Better safe than sorry

Keep washing it in salty water, you will spot soon enough if it gets infected (can cut it off then)

 

fuldhat - £26 +VAT (it is not the price, just think it over the top to change it on a 2 year old car with 16k on the clock

Re car : I agree it is a bit OTT, but they have a showroom and work force to keep going, they love simple things like brake fluid changes and can hide behind "it's a safety thing, can't be sure of operating conditions, bette safe than sorry, blah blah". I have had many cars with brake fluid at least 12 years or more old and unless you track them or drive like a nutter they were fine, but certainly well overdue a change.
