Dnk
As im in the middle of doing my front bumper i thought i'd ask if anyone knows if there is a special primer to use, ive removed all the laquer and base coat so im back to the gelcoat.
Tricky-Ricky
There probably is, but i have always used 2K primer on all the fibreglass that i have ever painted, and never yet had any problems.
Soaruss
Etche primer first then normal primer. Although i have gone straight onto the gelcoat after a good key, with normal primer and had no problems.
Tricky-Ricky
I thought etch primer was designed to go over bare metal?
Dnk
I thought etch primer was designed to go over bare metal? It is as far as im aware as it eats into the bare metal so if put on paint it reacts, the young lad who primed up my bumper while i was out used etch primer and its reacted in places and softend the base coat. Thats why ive had to flat it completely back to the gelcoat, all the black base coat as i rubbed with 180 grit rolled off rather than dust. Soaruss
For metal and fibreglass apparently. have a read. http://www.british-cars.net/mg-midget-sprite-technical-bbs/fibreglass-painting-2008042718370431532.htm
Tricky-Ricky
Thought it might be a problem, its designed to form a chemical bond with the substrate IE metal, it does exactly what the name implies, normal 2K should be absolutely fine, i have painted a fair bit of fibreglass and its always been fine.
