benkei
We've had cats for years, and never had much of a problem with them, until now. We have two cats, sisters, both about 8 or 9, and for some reason they've started peeing in the house! Usually in the bathroom, and on our dog's bed So our poor 13 year old lab-cross-retriever smells like cat pee all the time! We wash the bed, an try to make sure she has a nice clean bed to sleep in, but one of the cats, not sur which, could be both, sneak in and pee on her bed! The cat has even pee'd on my mum's bed, which is too far past a joke now! I'd even go as far to say... It's taking the piss! Does anyone have any previous experience or knowledge on how to stop the cat's peeing in the house? Isn't there a plant which they don't like, or a smell which deters them from it? Tom
I would like to know this too, my one will only do it at night and we've had to take out all the mats and had to lock her out from the living room and the rest of the house till morning. She has the kitchen and hallway now. We did put a cat bed out in the hall, but she pee'd on that even though she had spent the past 3 months sleeping in it She doesnt have a problem during the day so we think she doesnt like the cold at night. So far though around 10-11pm i'll put her out the front door and the only way back in is around the back of the house, so I figure that seeing as she's outside already she may aswell do her business before she comes back in Working at the moment Edit : mine is 15, you wouldnt believe it though, she hasnt changed since she was

benkei
We put them out at night... So I think they must do it either late in the evening before kicking out time, or during the day when they are in the house... Smarty... That's a bit extreme isn't it?! Carl_S
I am really sorry to hear about your cat pee problem Benkei. I would be mortified if my two male cats started to pee in the house. I don't have any solutions, (apart from random ones), so good luck with finding some that work. Carl
benkei
Thanks Carl... Mine are female cats btw, which is why I find it odd...
Carl_S
Yeah sure I understand that. Stress incontinence, or fear of a new change, perhaps related to a territorial threat. Search those cat forums and cat websites and let us know the outcome.
Tricky-Ricky
First question, have you changed anything in the house? cats can respond to stress in this way if anything has changed, doesn't have to be much. Have you changed the detergent you wash the dogs bed in, or your sheets etc, as household cleaners can cause cats to respond in this manner. As for a deterrent, strong citrus smells should discourage them, but you really need to look very carefully for the root cause.
Carl_S
Benkei, so you kick them out in the evening? When do they get a chance to come back in?
Dan_Turism0
Does seem a bit odd but my money would be on the cold affecting them, have they ever done it over the years or is this something new? sounds like a job for ninja cat - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=muLIPWjks_M
ilicos
Everyone I know who has female cats of around that age has the same problem. It appears to be a common thing. Bloody stinks !!! I even stopped going to my aunts house!!!
Carl_S
Wow illicos, glad I have male cats then. Mine are approaching that age, and it would be a downer to bring girls back to my pad and say, welcome to my home, sorry about the smell, my cats are incontinent. Mind you, could be a laugh. But yeah, if I as a human was forced to go outside in the snow by my owners, spending the cold snowy night outside, I would be sure to p**s in the house before I got chucked out and would be sure to tell my sis to do the same! benkei
Thanks for the comments guys! Some useful, some funny, and some sympathetic! I will try citrusness, see if that helps. But as far as detergent or changes goes, I can't think of anytihng really... Maybe it could be the cold?? I'd certainly look into it a little more. Garfy - what I do know is that cats have a high protien diet, and their shit is like caviar to dogs!! So you may thin they're eating shit, when the dog actually think's he's quite posh! benkei
I think the problem may a mix of the cold weather, and this new detergent my mum is trying out... Bloody annoying stuff! Lots of little white balls in a larger plastic ball... Supposed to last 100 washes or something like that?! But the plastic containers keep breaking and we're forever finding little white balls everywhere!! The cats must be peeing in protest! I'm going to have an orange everyday and leave the peel lying everywhere... See how they like it!
