CJ
I am looking to buy an external drive predominantly to use as a source of music files. I am looking at these 3: http://www.dabs.com/ProductView.aspx?Quicklinx=44JY&CategorySelectedId=11157&PageMode=1&NavigationKey=11157,397010000,11&InMerch=1 http://www.dabs.com/productview.aspx?Quicklinx=54J6&CategorySelectedId=11157&PageMode=1&NavigationKey=11157,47610000,11 http://www.dabs.com/ProductView.aspx?Quicklinx=4HMJ&CategorySelectedId=11157&PageMode=1&NavigationKey=11157,47610000,12&InMerch=1 Any advice on which to choose would be appreciated. Mike
Mine is a Freecom one (250Gb) and it's been fine.... but of these three I'd probably go for the Seagate. Basically go for the biggest one you can.
ivan
I would advise you get one that has an external power supply rather than relying on USB power. Otherwise you will need 2 free USB2 ports and a decent PC PSU. I have a Seagate FreeAgent Go that had to be replaced under warranty after just 1 week. CJ
Well, based on the comments so far and seeing as there is only 15.00 difference between them, I am erring towards the larger capacity
Wez
Are you going to use it as a backup or the only source of your files, if so I would buy two or one that has two drives in it. Loosing all your data is not fun. Unless its data you dont car about.

Does that make sense?

Yes. Go for the larger drives. Much better reviews for the Seagate due to it's speed. I've used Iomega before and found it slow. It put me off the brand. Seagate, Maxtor and Western Digital always make my list.
adnanshah247
i would say the 500gb due to the 7200rpm. i bought a 750gb maxtor external drive from pc world for about £70 i think, they have some nice sales going on so i would pay them a visit. Nic
If you are regularly transferring a lot of big files I would get an external hard drive with firewire connection. They are more expensive, but are a lot quicker at transferring big files and also allow you to boot up your computer from the hard drive if needed. I recently got one of these http://www.wdc.com/en/products/products.asp?driveid=

I used to use my external HD with my laptop so felt that I'd rather not have the extra PITA of carrying a power adapter. I now use the same hard drive with my new PC and in all honesty again prefer it with the USB power supply. I only have 4 plug scokets for my PC, TV, Sky etc and have no spare, I do have plenty spare USB sockets though...
